About this place

The Scharnebeck ship lift (Schiffshebewerk Scharnebeck, also called Lüneburg ship lift) is a giant double vertical boat elevator on the Elbe Lateral Canal in Lower Saxony. Two huge troughs raise and lower inland vessels by up to 38 meters, and you can watch the process from visitor platforms. It is one of northern Germany's best stops for fans of engineering, canals and industrial heritage, and a possible day trip from Lüneburg.

Where it is and how to get there

The lift sits at Scharnebeck, about 10 kilometers northeast of Lüneburg. Lüneburg is the nearest larger town and is on the regional rail network with connections from Hamburg; from there, plan to continue by bus, bike or car and check timetables in advance. There is a car park at the lift, opposite the climbing forest (Kletterwald). The address is Adendorfer Straße 44, 21379 Scharnebeck. The local tourist office is nearby at Adendorfer Straße 46.

What makes it special

The lift was completed in 1974 and the first ship passed on December 5, 1975. It has two independently working troughs with counterweights, each 100 meters long and 11.8 meters wide, with a maximum lift of 38 meters. One lift takes about three minutes and a full passage 15 to 20 minutes. It draws around 500,000 visitors per year. Each trough works like a giant elevator for ships: a vessel enters a water-filled trough, the gate closes and the trough moves vertically. A new lock is planned beside it, according to the Federal Transport Plan 2030. One source gives a lift height of 23 meters, but the 38-meter figure is the one most commonly cited.

What to see

  • The lower visitor platform with a view onto the two troughs.
  • The upper viewing platform with a wide view over the canal.
  • The information center or exhibition hall explaining how the lift works.
  • A walking route from the tourist information past both platforms and back through the adjoining park.

No boat trips through the lift are offered. Local information is mainly in German.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The platforms are described as freely accessible by tourism portals, but we could not confirm official opening hours or prices for the exhibition hall. Contact the Scharnebeck tourist office at +49 4136 9077500 before you go.

Practical tips

Allow one to two hours. Prices, if any, are in euros. No accessibility information was available to us, so ask in advance if you need step-free access. Bring patience, because whether a ship is being lifted depends on canal traffic.
