About this place

Pfunds Molkerei (Pfund's Dairy) in Dresden's Neustadt district has been called the most beautiful dairy shop in the world. The small sales room on Bautzner Straße is covered from floor to ceiling in hand-painted Villeroy & Boch tiles, making it one of the most unusual places to visit in Dresden. Admission is free, you can taste and buy regional cheese and Saxon wine, and a short stop is worth it even if you do not shop.

Where it is and how to get there

The shop is at Bautzner Straße 79, in the Äußere Neustadt, a short walk from the Elbe. Dresden is about two hours from Berlin by train. The operator says it is about 5 minutes on foot from the "Pulsnitzer Straße" stop when coming from the city center, or 3 minutes from "Diakonissenkrankenhaus" when coming from Weißer Hirsch. Paid parking is available at a public garage at Bautzner Straße 29 or a private lot at Prießnitzstraße 2.

History

Paul Pfund and his brother Friedrich founded the dairy company in 1880. Daily milk processing grew from about 500 liters to around 40,000 liters by 1895. The main building went up in 1891, and the shop opened in 1892 with tiles designed together with Villeroy & Boch. Pfund was an early advocate of pasteurization and the first in Germany to produce condensed milk. The building survived the 1945 bombing of Dresden, the company was expropriated in 1972, and production stopped in 1978. In November 1997 the Guinness Book of Records listed it as the "most beautiful dairy shop in the world."

What to see

  • Tiled walls and floor: hand-painted scenes, ornaments and sayings
  • The decorated ceiling: rich ornament overhead
  • The counter: regional cheeses, Saxon wines, souvenirs and milk soap
  • Mini bistro: two seats for cheese plates and drinks

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on Sundays and public holidays, except Advent Sundays, when it is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry is free and no purchase is required. There are no guided tours, but information material is available in the shop. Plan 15 to 30 minutes. The attached restaurant is a separate business, and dogs are allowed there. No accessibility details are confirmed, so contact the operator at +49 351 808080 before your visit.
