About this place

The Dresden Transport Museum (Verkehrsmuseum Dresden) sits in the historic Johanneum on Neumarkt square, a few steps from the Frauenkirche. Across roughly 5,000 square meters it tells the story of road, rail, water and air travel, from an early Benz motor car to steam locomotives and a giant model railway. If you are wondering what to do in Dresden on a rainy day or with kids, this is one of the city's most rewarding museums and an easy add-on to any Old Town walk.

Where it is and how to get there

The museum is at Augustusstraße 1, in the heart of Dresden's Altstadt. Dresden is about two hours from Berlin by train, and from Dresden Hauptbahnhof you reach the Old Town by tram or on foot. The museum names the tram stops Altmarkt (lines 1, 2, 4), Theaterplatz (lines 3, 4, 7, 9) and Pirnaischer Platz (lines 12 and 44, bus 62). There is no parking at the museum itself; use public car parks nearby.

A building with a story

The Johanneum was built between 1586 and 1590 as an electoral stable and armory. It was heavily damaged in the bombing of February 1945, rebuilt from 1950, and the museum opened its first rooms on June 3, 1956. Behind it lies the Stallhof, regarded as the only surviving original ring-tilting ground in Europe.

What to see

  • Road transport: about 200 years of mobility, from an early "running machine" to cars such as the Wartburg 355
  • Railways: Saxon and German rail history, including the 1861 locomotive MULDENTHAL and a replica of the Saxonia
  • Shipping and aviation: around 1,000 years of shipping, plus early flying machines and GDR aircraft building
  • Model railway: 225 locomotives and wagons on 785 meters of track
  • Hands-on areas: a traffic garden and the dyna mix lab for kids

Through May 30, 2027, a special exhibition called "Reif für die Insel – Warum wir reisen" (roughly "Ready for the island: why we travel") is on view.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on Mondays except Easter and Whit Monday and a few special openings, including October 12 and 19 and December 28 in 2026. It is closed on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. Tickets cost EUR 12 for adults and EUR 6 reduced; children under 6 are free. A small family ticket is EUR 12 and a large one EUR 24. A happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. cuts adult entry to EUR 5. Tickets can be bought on site or online.

Because the foyer is being renovated, you currently enter through the rear entrance. Expect to spend two to three hours inside. The museum offers an audio guide app; the official site lists foreign-language group tours, so ask the museum if you need English.

Accessibility and nearby sights

The museum is suitable for wheelchair users with a staff-operated elevator and platform lift, though the gallery in the aviation exhibition is not accessible. The Frauenkirche, the Procession of Princes and the Zwinger are all within a short walk, making this an easy stop on a day trip from Berlin.
