About this place

Bautzen's Old Town sits on a granite bluff above the Spree River in eastern Saxony, crowned by medieval towers, bastions and Baroque townhouses. Often called the "city of towers," it is also the cultural capital of the Sorbs, a Slavic minority whose language you will see on every bilingual street sign. With a leaning tower, a cathedral shared by two denominations and famous local mustard, Bautzen is an easy and rewarding day trip from Dresden.

Where it is and how to get there

Bautzen lies about 50 km (31 miles) east of Dresden on the rail line to Görlitz.

  • By train: Regional Express trains from Dresden take about 46 minutes; slower regional trains about 54 minutes. The Deutschlandticket is valid. The Old Town is within walking distance of the station.
  • By car: Leave the A4 autobahn at Salzenforst, Bautzen-West or Bautzen-East. The large Schützenplatz lot (about 500 spaces, free outside events) is a five-minute walk from the center; central garages charge a fee.

Combine Bautzen and Görlitz in one long day, or stay overnight to enjoy both.

A thousand years of history

Bautzen was first recorded in 1002 as the main settlement of a Sorbian tribe. Its Sorbian name, Budyšin, is still in use. As the historic capital of Upper Lusatia, the town grew wealthy and fortified itself; 16 towers, bastions and gates survive. In the 20th century, Bautzen's prisons became infamous; the Bautzen Memorial now documents political persecution in Soviet and East German times.

Things to do in Bautzen Old Town

  • Main Market Square and Town Hall: a yellow Baroque town hall surrounded by elegant townhouses.
  • St. Peter's Cathedral: the oldest and one of the largest simultaneous churches in Germany, shared by Catholic and Protestant congregations.
  • Reichenturm: Bautzen's leaning tower, 56 m tall and tilting about 1.4 m. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April to October.
  • Old Waterworks (Alte Wasserkunst): a 47-meter tower from 1558 that once pumped river water into town, now a technical museum with a viewing platform. Together with St. Michael's Church it forms the classic Bautzen view.
  • Ortenburg Castle and the Sorbian Museum at the tip of the plateau.
  • Mustard Museum: learn why Bautzen mustard is famous across eastern Germany.

Practical tips

Allow two to three hours for a walk, or a full day with museums and towers. The tourist office at Hauptmarkt 1 runs a 90-minute guided walk ("1000 steps through 1000 years") and sells combination tickets for towers and museums; ask about tours in English. As of October 2026 it is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cobblestones and steep lanes make the Old Town tiring with strollers or wheelchairs. In December, the Wenzelsmarkt Christmas market fills the squares.

Is Bautzen worth visiting?
