Hanover Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips
Table of contents

From Monday 23 November 2026, Hanover's Old Town lights up again. The city's biggest Christmas market runs from the Platz der Weltausstellung along Grupenstraße and past the Market Church down to the River Leine and Ballhofplatz. Until 22 December it is open daily from 11am to 9pm, with a traditional market, a Finnish village with a Lappish tent, a small fir forest around a wishing well and a medieval quarter by the Historical Museum. On top of that there's the Christmas village in front of the main station, which stays open until 30 December, and a market on the Lister Meile. Here are all the 2026 dates, a map and our tips.

Map: Christmas markets in Hanover

The Old Town sites sit close together: from the station you walk along Bahnhofstraße and through Kröpcke to the Market Church in about ten minutes. The Finnish village, the wishing-well forest and the historic quarter are each only a few minutes further. The Lister Meile starts on the other side of the station, and the zoo is on the edge of the Eilenriede forest, reachable by light rail or bus.

The Old Town: four markets in one

The Old Town market isn't a single square but a walk through areas with different moods. In 2025 the city counted 188 stall units: 125 in the traditional market, 45 in the historic section, six in the Finnish village and two in the wishing-well forest, plus three carousels. The same layout is planned for 2026.

Around the Market Church

The traditional market, with the most stalls, stretches from Platz der Weltausstellung to the Market Church. Expect tree ornaments, crafts and the classics from mulled wine to bratwurst. Every year a big Christmas tree stands in front of the Gothic brick church; in 2025 it was a 19-metre Nordmann fir from the Sauerland. Half an hour before closing, the night watchman walks through the market and rings in the end of the day – a nice ritual if you stay till the end.

Finnish Christmas village on Ballhofplatz

Among the half-timbered houses of Ballhofplatz stands a real Lappish tent. Stalls in the Finnish village sell Finnish specialities and handicrafts, and the atmosphere is calmer than at the Market Church. If you want something other than bratwurst and mulled wine, this is the place.

Wishing Well Forest on the Holzmarkt

In front of the Leibnizhaus, around 50 fir trees fill an area of about 400 square metres during the market. In the middle is the Oskar Winter Fountain with the wishing ring in its wrought-iron railing: turn it and, so the legend goes, your wish comes true. Two forester's huts serve food and drinks. Many locals consider this the cosiest corner of the market.

Historic Christmas market by the Historical Museum

A circular route leads into the medieval Christmas village, which spreads around the Historical Museum along Burgstraße, Roßmühle, Klostergang and Pferdestraße to an area between the adult education centre and the Leine. In the craftsmen's lane you can watch demonstrations and join in, and every day there's music, jugglers and fire shows at 6pm and 8pm.

Christmas village at the main station

Right in front of the station on Ernst-August-Platz, the Roncalli market team builds its own Christmas village. The huts are inspired by Lower Saxony's half-timbered architecture, and more than 50 exhibitors sell gifts, crafts and food. Its landmark is a small historic Ferris wheel with views over the lit-up city centre. Daily at 5pm, 6:30pm and 8pm a Christmas story is projected onto the historic station facade. There's also a historic restaurant-café and a virtual-reality sleigh ride with reindeer.

Worth knowing: the station village stays open longer than the Old Town market. It runs daily 11am–9pm until 23 December, 11am–2pm on Christmas Eve, and again from 26 to 30 December, 11am–9pm. If you're in Hanover between Christmas and New Year, this is where you'll still find mulled wine.

Lister Meile and ZooLights

On the Lister Meile pedestrian street north of the station, decorated huts sell wooden toys, candles, ceramics and treats from 23 November to 22 December, with rides for children. Hours are the same as in the Old Town: daily 11am–9pm. It's more of a neighbourhood market and a good choice if you're staying in the Oststadt district.

At Hanover's Erlebnis-Zoo the light festival is now called ZooLights. More than 750 illuminated objects, interactive stations and about 20 kilometres of fairy lights line a route of roughly two kilometres. From 17 November to 23 December 2026 it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm to 10pm (closed Mondays). From 25 December to 10 January it opens daily (not on 31 December), then Friday to Sunday until the end of January and on 1 and 2 February. Tickets are sold online: adults from €23.80, children aged 5 to 17 from €14.80.

What to eat and drink

  • Finnish specialities in the village on Ballhofplatz – a good reason not to stay only around the Market Church.
  • Mead and hearty food in the historic quarter, timed with the evening fire show.
  • Mulled wine in the wishing-well forest among the firs, ideally with a turn of the wishing ring.
  • Roasted almonds and gingerbread hearts from the traditional market to take home.

The city hasn't published 2026 mulled wine prices yet. As everywhere, add a mug deposit.

With children

Hanover makes things easy for families. In 2025 there was a fixed free daily programme, which the city gives as a guide for 2026:

  • storyteller daily at 3:30pm and 4:30pm
  • Punch and Judy show daily at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm
  • Father Christmas daily at 5:30pm
  • Christmas bakery daily 11am–7pm (2025 fee: €3)
  • three carousels, from the big carousel to the small Ferris wheel

With a pushchair, mornings are best; from late afternoon Grupenstraße and the area around the Market Church get crowded. The Finnish village and the wishing-well forest are smaller and easier to manage.

An Advent day in Hanover: our suggestion

  1. 10am – New Town Hall: start at the New Town Hall with its city models in the domed hall. On a clear day the view from the dome is worth it.
  2. 11:30am – Maschsee: a short walk along the Maschsee lake, which begins right behind the town hall.
  3. 1pm – Old Town: first round of the market at the Market Church, then on to the wishing-well forest.
  4. 3:30pm – Ballhofplatz: Finnish village; with children, then the storyteller.
  5. 6pm – Historic quarter: fire show at the Historical Museum, followed by dinner in the Old Town.
  6. Late evening – station or zoo: the projection on the station facade at 8pm or, with a ticket, ZooLights until 10pm.

Practical tips

When to go

  • Weekdays 11am–3pm: the quietest time, also for a look inside the Market Church.
  • Friday and Saturday evenings: busy, especially between Kröpcke and the Market Church.
  • 22 November: in 2026 the market opens the day after Totensonntag, so nothing is open yet on Sunday 22 November.
  • 23 to 30 December: the Old Town market has closed, but the station village is still open (except 25 December).

Getting there and parking

Hannover Hauptbahnhof is a major ICE hub, so it's quick to reach from Hamburg, Berlin and the Ruhr. From the station it's about ten minutes on foot through the pedestrian zone to the Market Church; by light rail, get off at Kröpcke or Markthalle/Landtag. Drivers can use the car parks on the edge of the Old Town, but on Advent Saturdays they fill up early, so public transport is more relaxed.

Accessibility

The Old Town is mostly flat, but the historic quarter has cobblestones and narrow lanes. With a wheelchair or walker, weekday mornings are the most comfortable.

Dogs

The city doesn't mention a dog ban. In the evening the narrow lanes get crowded and loud, so an early visit is kinder to your dog.

Where to stay

There are hotels around the main station and in the city centre, all within walking distance of the markets. Prices rise during trade fair weeks, so book early.

Gift idea: the town hall, the lake and the Market Church as a souvenir of your Advent trip – design a personal poster.

Nearby: our tips

  • New Town Hall: domed hall with four city models and a view over Hanover.
  • Maschsee: lakeside path for a winter walk between the town hall and the Südstadt.
  • Herrenhausen Gardens: the Baroque Great Garden, a quiet contrast to the market bustle even in winter.
  • Hanover Zoo: animals by day, ZooLights in the evening.
  • Hildesheim Cathedral: UNESCO World Heritage, about half an hour away by S-Bahn.
