Essen starts early: the International Christmas Market opens on Friday 13 November 2026 and runs until 23 December. The stalls stretch from Willy-Brandt-Platz right outside the main station through the pedestrian zone to Kennedyplatz, plus a medieval market on the Flachsmarkt and a 45-metre Ferris wheel. Above it all glow the Essen Festival of Lights (Lichtwochen), held for the 77th time in 2026, which decorate the centre from 25 October with illuminated animals, arches of stars and a crown of lights. Here are all the dates, opening hours and exceptions for 2026.

Arrive by train and you're in the middle of it: the first section is on Willy-Brandt-Platz in front of the main station. From there you follow Kettwiger Straße past the Market Church to Kennedyplatz, the central market area. The medieval market is on the Flachsmarkt north of the Market Church, and the Ferris wheel on Burgplatz next to the cathedral. Walking from the station to Kennedyplatz takes about ten minutes – much longer if you browse.
What makes the Essen market special
A market through the whole city centre
The International Christmas Market isn't one square of stalls but a route through the pedestrian zone. Traders come from many countries, hence the name: alongside tree ornaments and crafts you'll find stalls with specialities from Peru to Baden. Over Kennedyplatz a net of thousands of lights, the "crown of lights", spans the stalls. The market also has a nostalgic Baroque carousel.
The Essen Festival of Lights
The Lichtwochen are older than many German Christmas markets: in 2026 they shine for the 77th time, from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027. Trumpeting angels, arches of stars and meridian balls hang above the streets, with real illuminated fir trees and artistic LED trees. Children love the glowing animals: a polar bear on Kettwiger Straße, an orca on Burgplatz, a kangaroo on Friedensplatz and a teddy bear with a letterbox for Christmas wishes on Kardinal-Hengsbach-Platz. Come early in Advent, or before the market opens, and you'll see the lights without the crowds.
The Lichtrad Ferris wheel
The 45-metre wheel stands on Burgplatz and gives the best view of the lit-up centre after dark. It turns from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027, Sunday to Thursday noon–8pm and Friday and Saturday noon–9pm. It's closed on 22 November, 24 to 26 December, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, and runs 2–8pm on Remembrance Sunday.
Medieval Christmas market on the Flachsmarkt
A few steps off the main route you step back in time. The Flachsmarkt sells goods that look straight out of the Middle Ages – handmade soaps, mead, furs, smoked goods, crystals and jewellery – with taverns alongside. In 2025 medieval bands played on several evenings and there was a fire show on two Saturdays. The 2026 programme is still to be published.

Special dates in 2026
- Essen funkelt (4 to 6 December): on Burgplatz, right behind the Ferris wheel, Radio Essen, the WAZ newspaper and Essen Marketing host a three-day Christmas party. The newsrooms broadcast live from a glass studio and the stage features local acts and well-known bands including Sportfreunde Stiller and The BossHoss. Entry is free; donations go to the Aktion Lichtblicke charity.
- Sunday shopping (13 December): city-centre shops open too, so expect crowds.
- The Mulled Wine Mystery (Glühwein-Krimi): two smartphone escape games lead you across the market. Alongside 2025's "Operation Winterkrone" there's a new case for 2026, "Zimtspur unter dem Dom". Teams of 2 to 50 can play, and both games work in English. Book via the Glühwein-Krimi website.
A sustainable market
Essen was European Green Capital in 2017, and it shows. The market runs on green electricity, there's no disposable tableware for food eaten on site – reusable dishes come with a deposit, and chips and churros are served in paper bags. Plastic bags are banned, and the organiser favours regional, fair-trade and organic products when choosing traders. The travel portal European Best Destinations named it "Best Sustainable Christmas Market in Europe".
What to eat and drink
- International specialities: for example potato dishes at the Peruvian stall or sweet treats from the Baden bakery hut.
- Mead and liqueurs at the medieval market.
- Potato fritters and bratwurst – Ruhr classics.
- Mulled wine in a deposit mug: if you want to keep the mug, just keep it and forgo the deposit.
The organiser hasn't published 2026 prices for mulled wine and food yet.
An Advent day in Essen: our suggestion
- 10am – Zollverein: take the tram to the Zollverein Coal Mine. The escalator up into the coal washery and the view from the roof are highlights.
- 1pm – back to the centre: the market opens at noon; start on Willy-Brandt-Platz and stroll along Kettwiger Straße.
- 2:30pm – Cathedral and Market Church: look into Essen Cathedral with its Golden Madonna, the oldest surviving fully sculpted figure of Mary in the Western world, then head to the Flachsmarkt.
- 4pm – Kennedyplatz: when it gets dark, the crown of lights comes on.
- 5:30pm – Ferris wheel: a turn above the illuminated city.
- Evening – medieval market: finish with mead in the tavern.

Practical tips
When to go
- The first week from 13 November: the market is already open while others are still being built. Ideal if you want to avoid crowds.
- Weekdays right after the noon opening: the quietest time.
- Saturdays and 13 December: very busy, partly because of the Limbecker Platz and Rathaus Galerie shopping centres.
- 22 November: Totensonntag – the market is closed, but the Festival of Lights still shines.
Getting there and parking
Essen Hauptbahnhof is an ICE stop and a regional rail hub in the Ruhr, so Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Duisburg are close. The market begins right in front of the station. Drivers will find car parks around the centre, shown on the city's parking guidance system and online map; on Advent Saturdays they fill up early. Coaches drop off at the long-distance bus station on the south side of the main station and park on Frohnhauser Straße, Schwanenkampstraße and Mittelstraße.
With children
The glowing animals of the Festival of Lights make a treasure hunt in themselves: polar bear, orca, kangaroo and the teddy with his letterbox. Add the Baroque carousel and the Ferris wheel. The wide pedestrian zone works well with a pushchair; only Kennedyplatz gets tight in the evening.
Accessibility
The centre is flat and the streets are wide. The Flachsmarkt is paved but accessible. Weekdays are the most relaxed time with a wheelchair.
Dogs
The organiser doesn't mention a dog ban. The pedestrian zone is packed in the evening, so early afternoon is better for dogs.
Where to stay
There are hotels right by the main station and in the centre; many visitors also stay in Düsseldorf or Bochum. Pick up an overview map of all stalls at the tourist information office at Kettwiger Straße 35 (Monday to Friday 10am–6pm, Saturday 10am–3pm) or at the market itself.
Gift idea: Zollverein and the city lights as a keepsake – design a personal poster.
