About this place

From outside it looks like a small Greek temple on Prinzregentenstraße; inside opens a world of dark walls, gold, ornament and symbols. Villa Stuck was the home and studio of Munich's "prince of painters" Franz von Stuck (1863–1928), who designed every detail himself: façade, rooms, furniture and garden. Today it is a municipal museum where you walk through Stuck's historic rooms and see exhibitions on art around 1900 and contemporary art in the New Studio.

History: an artist stages himself

Around 1900 Stuck, a miller's son from Lower Bavaria, was one of Munich's most celebrated painters. In 1897/98 he built the villa to his own plans, strictly neoclassical outside and Art Nouveau inside; the studio building followed in 1914/15. Villa, studio and garden were meant as one total work of art, and in 1928, shortly before his death, the Technical University of Munich made him an honorary doctor for it.

After his daughter's death in 1961 the house was at risk. In 1965 Hans Joachim and Amélie Ziersch bought it with its art and furniture to set up a museum, which opened on 9 March 1968. In 1992 it became Munich's third municipal museum. After a renovation in 2024/25, when the museum moved temporarily, the villa is open again at its original address.

What to see

  • Historic rooms: Reception rooms, music salon and smoking room, with painted walls and ceilings and furniture designed by Stuck, including murals of a flute-playing Pan and dancers.
  • Vestibule: A wooden coffered ceiling with symbols and a painted cast of an Assyrian dying lioness.
  • Riding Amazon: A bronze in front of the entrance, cast in 1936 from Stuck's 1913 plaster model.
  • Artist's garden: A sculpture garden modelled on ancient villas, with pergola, fountain and reliefs.
  • New Studio: Changing exhibitions from Art Nouveau and design to contemporary art.
