About this place

Schwerin Castle is the fairy-tale palace of northern Germany. Rising from an island in Lake Schwerin, with golden domes, dozens of turrets, and terraced gardens reaching down to the water, it was the residence of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Since 2024 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Residence Ensemble Schwerin." Today it houses both a museum of lavish state rooms and the state parliament, making it a must-see in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Where it is and how to get there

Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, between Hamburg and the Baltic coast. Regional and intercity trains from Hamburg take roughly an hour, making the castle an easy day trip from Hamburg; regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From Schwerin Hauptbahnhof, the castle is about a 20-minute walk through the old town, or take bus line 10. Paid parking is available nearby, including on Grüne Straße by the State Theater.

A thousand years of history

Slavic Obotrites built a fortification on the island around 941. In 1160, Henry the Lion captured it and founded the town of Schwerin. The castle was expanded in Renaissance style from 1560, but its romantic look dates from a major rebuilding between 1843 and 1857 under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, led by architects Georg Adolph Demmler and Friedrich August Stüler. The French Château de Chambord is often cited as an inspiration. Since 1990, the castle has been the seat of the state parliament, and it attracts around 200,000 visitors a year.

Things to see

  • Throne Room: The highlight of the tour, with marble columns, gilded details, and a canopied throne.
  • Ancestral Gallery: Portraits of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg.
  • The Grand Duchess's apartments: Elegant 19th-century living rooms, including a tea room.
  • Castle Church: A Renaissance chapel among the oldest parts of the complex.
  • The Petermännchen: According to legend, a little ghost haunts the castle; look for his statue in the inner courtyard.
  • Gardens: The Palace Garden is open around the clock, and the terraced Burggarten until dusk, both free of charge.

More than a castle

The UNESCO listing covers not only the castle but the entire Residence Ensemble, which includes 37 other buildings across the city, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. A short walk from the castle across the Alter Garten square, past the State Theater and the State Museum with its Old Masters, gives you a sense of how the grand dukes shaped Schwerin into a showcase capital.
