About this place

Doberan Minster (Doberaner Münster) in Bad Doberan is one of the finest brick Gothic churches in northern Germany and one of the most important surviving monuments of the Cistercians in Mecklenburg. The vast former abbey church, with its slender spire, stands in a spacious park near the Baltic coast, a few kilometers from the seaside resort of Heiligendamm and the port city of Rostock. It draws roughly 200,000 visitors a year and makes an easy day trip from Rostock or Hamburg.

Where it is and how to get there

Bad Doberan lies near the Baltic Sea, about 15 km from Rostock. Trains run hourly between Rostock, Bad Doberan and Wismar, and the station is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Minster. Rostock has direct InterCity and regional connections to Hamburg (via Schwerin), Berlin, Stralsund and Leipzig, according to the Minster's own travel page. The narrow-gauge steam railway "Molli" runs from Kühlungsborn and Heiligendamm into town, with a 5 to 10 minute walk from the stop. By car, take the A20 to the exit Bad Doberan.

Why it matters

The abbey was founded in the 12th century, and the present church was begun around 1280 and consecrated on June 3, 1368. After the Reformation the monastery was dissolved in 1552, and the church became a parish church. It is described as the Cistercian abbey church with the most complete original furnishings, about 85 percent. Highlights include the high altar of around 1300, said to be the oldest winged altar in art history, the cross altar from around 1360 to 1370 and the sacrament tower of around 1350 to 1360. The nave is 26 meters high, and the church was the main burial place of the Mecklenburg dukes in the Middle Ages. In April 2026 it was named a "Historic Landmark of Engineering in Germany".

What to see

  • The high altar and the cross altar with a triumphal cross about 15 meters tall
  • The sacrament tower, about 11.6 meters high
  • The astronomical clock face, made around 1390
  • The park around the church
