About this place

Güstrow Palace (Schloss Güstrow) is one of the most important Renaissance palaces in northern Germany. With its richly decorated facades, towers and courtyards, it sits in the center of Güstrow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and was a residence of the Mecklenburg dukes in the 16th and 17th centuries. One important thing before you go: the palace is under renovation and its interior is currently closed. The palace grounds and the exterior can still be enjoyed.

Where it is and how to get there

Güstrow is south of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The palace stands at Franz-Parr-Platz, and the tourist office is next door at Franz-Parr-Platz 10. Check Deutsche Bahn for connections from your starting point.

Why it matters

The palace was built from 1558 for Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg after a fire destroyed the south wing in 1557. The north wing followed in 1587 to 1591, and a gatehouse and bridge completed the ensemble in 1671. Albrecht von Wallenstein resided here from 1628 to 1630. Later uses included a military hospital, a workhouse and a home for the elderly. A museum was housed in the palace from 1972.

Current status (as of October 2026)

The palace has been under extensive renovation since 2020. According to reports from February 2026, the outdoor areas including the courtyard are expected to reopen in spring 2027, and the interior is targeted for reopening in 2028, the city's 800th anniversary. The total budget is about EUR 50 million, which is not enough to renovate all interior rooms. No tickets are available at the moment. The palace garden remains open for walks, according to the local tourism site. Check with the state palace administration or the tourist office before traveling.

Is it worth visiting?

Only if you are in the area. A walk around the palace and garden takes about 45 to 60 minutes. It combines easily with a stroll through Güstrow's old town. If you want to see the interiors and museum, wait until it reopens.
