About this place

Schloss Rheydt (Rheydt Castle) in Mönchengladbach is a Renaissance moated castle on the Lower Rhine and now a city museum. Surrounded by water-filled moats, the complex of gatehouse, outer court and manor house is a rewarding stop in North Rhine-Westphalia. If you are looking for a castle near Düsseldorf that mixes Renaissance architecture, art collections and casemates, it is worth a half-day visit.

Where it is and how to get there

The castle stands in Rheydt, a district of Mönchengladbach, a city west of Düsseldorf. The nearest main station is Rheydt Hbf, reachable by Deutsche Bahn regional trains. The museum does not publish directions or parking details on its website, so use the regional VRR journey planner or a map app for the last stretch. The address is Schlossstraße 508, 41238 Mönchengladbach.

What makes it special

Rheydt is the only fully preserved Renaissance castle on the Lower Rhine. The first documented mention dates to 1180, and the present castle was built from 1558 under Otto von Bylandt. The manor house blends Italian Renaissance forms with Dutch influences, visible in its facade figures, fireplaces, tiles and painted decoration. Bastions and casemates fed by the Niers river form an outer defense, and an inner moat surrounds the outer court and the main house.

In 1917 the city of Rheydt bought the castle and in 1922 the museum opened. A major restoration followed between 1988 and 1993.

What to see inside

  • The manor house with Renaissance and Baroque art and objects.
  • Material on the textile history of Mönchengladbach. The city-history exhibition is currently closed for redesign, according to the museum.
  • A special exhibition titled "Im goldenen Käfig! Adelige Frauen zwischen Pflicht und Privileg" (roughly: noblewomen between duty and privilege), shown in the manor house.
  • The casemates, reachable by stairs only.

Open-air concerts take place in the inner courtyard in summer, and an annual knights' festival adds a medieval market. The museum website is in German, so contact the museum if you need English-language information.
