About this place

Schloss Dyck near Jüchen is one of the most important moated castles in the Rhineland, set in a 53-hectare English landscape garden. The yellow main castle with its outer courtyards sits on four islands in a small stream and mirrors itself in the water. If you are looking for things to do near Düsseldorf, Cologne or Mönchengladbach, this is an easy half-day trip that combines a Baroque castle, rare old trees and playgrounds.

Why it matters

The site is documented since 1094, and it stayed in the hands of the Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck family for over 900 years until a foundation took over in 1999. The main castle was extended into a four-wing complex between 1656 and 1667. The landscape garden was laid out from 1820 to 1835 by the Scottish garden architect Thomas Blaikie for Prince Joseph, a passionate botanist. Today the foundation runs the castle and park as a center for garden art and landscape culture.

What to see

  • The moated castle: bridges, small guard houses and mirror-like water make it the classic photo spot.
  • "Historie" exhibition: state rooms in the east wing, with a ceiling painting from 1656, gold-leather wallpaper and Chinese silk wallpaper.
  • "Landschaft" exhibition: garden art of the 18th and 19th centuries, in the stable courtyard.
  • The garden: very old trees such as giant yew, redwood, swamp cypress and tulip tree; rhododendrons bloom in May.
  • Playgrounds: a water playground and a labyrinth playground for kids.

Allow 2 to 4 hours. Open tours start at 2 p.m. at the Rosenturm; tours for booked groups are offered in German, English and Dutch.
