Castles
Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia
Burg Linn in Krefeld-Linn is a medieval moated castle with a rare hexagonal plan, surrounded by a wide water-filled moat and a park. The Burg Linn Museum covers three buildings: the castle, a Baroque hunting lodge in the outer courtyard and an archaeology museum. It makes a good day trip from Düsseldorf or the wider Lower Rhine region if you like castles, Roman history and a quiet walk by the water.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the lords of Linn and counts as one of the most important lowland castles in the region. Its hexagonal ground plan is unusual, and the museum points to Byzantine influence brought by Otto of Linn after the Third Crusade. The hunting lodge, once a brewery, was converted in the 18th century by the Elector of Cologne, Clemens August. In 1806 it was bought by the silk-weaving de Greiff family, who lived there for more than a century.
Allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Roman history here is part of the Lower Germanic Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021.
Open Tuesday to Sunday: April 1 to October 31, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; November 1 to March 31, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays and on December 24, 25 and 31. Admission is 8 EUR (reduced 4 EUR). A combined ticket with the German Textile Museum costs 10 EUR. Visitors under 18 get in free.
The address is Rheinbabenstraße 85, 47809 Krefeld. Tram line 44 connects Linn with downtown Krefeld in about 15 minutes, and free parking is available nearby.
The museum says the site is not wheelchair accessible; the castle and hunting lodge have many stairs and uneven floors, but the archaeology museum is largely usable with a mobility impairment. Animals are not allowed inside except guide dogs.
