About this place

Cappenberg Castle (Schloss Cappenberg) in Selm sits on a wooded ridge on the edge of the Münsterland, just north of the Ruhr region. This gleaming white Baroque complex grew out of the first Premonstratensian monastery in the German-speaking world, founded in 1122, and later became the retirement home of the Prussian reformer Baron vom Stein. Today it combines an art and history museum, a Romanesque church holding a famous bust of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and sweeping views over the Lippe valley.

A Short History

In 1122, Counts Gottfried and Otto of Cappenberg turned their castle into a monastery and handed it to Norbert of Xanten, founder of the Premonstratensian order. After destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the present three-winged Baroque building took shape from the mid-17th century. The monastery was dissolved in 1803. In 1816, Baron Karl vom und zum Stein, the statesman behind Prussia's great reforms, bought the estate and lived here until his death in 1831. The Counts of Kanitz have owned it since 1926.

What to See

  • The museum: reopened in April 2022 after renovation. The ground floor hosts changing art exhibitions run by the Unna district, and the upper floor holds a permanent exhibition on Baron vom Stein. The current show, "Unter Tage," featuring Alfred Schmidt's drawings of Ruhr coal miners, runs until October 25, 2026.
  • The collegiate church of St. John the Evangelist: a Romanesque basilica completed in 1148, with carved choir stalls and medieval tombs.
  • The Cappenberg Head: a gilded bronze bust from around 1160, regarded as a portrait of Barbarossa, who gave it to his godfather Otto of Cappenberg. The church is an active parish, so check with the parish before you visit.

Opening Hours and Tickets

As of October 2026, during exhibitions the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is €6, reduced €3, and free for visitors under 18. Holders of the WelcomeCard Ruhr also enter free. Guided tours on Sundays are in German. After the current exhibition closes on October 25, confirm opening times before you travel.

How to Get There

Cappenberg is part of the town of Selm, about 20 km (12 miles) north of Dortmund, between Lünen and Werne. Dortmund Airport and Düsseldorf Airport are the nearest airports. By car, the castle is easily reached from the A1 and A2 highways. By public transport, take a regional train toward Lünen or Selm and continue by local bus to the "Schloss Cappenberg" stop. The Deutschlandticket covers both. According to the Unna district, the museum is wheelchair accessible with an elevator.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you are exploring Dortmund or the Ruhr region and want a quiet, green contrast. Allow two to three hours for the museum, the church, and the viewpoint over the Lippe valley, and stop at the café in the old skittle alley.
