About this place

Vischering Castle (Burg Vischering) in Lüdinghausen is one of the oldest and best-preserved moated castles in the Münsterland, the flat, green region of northwestern Germany famous for its water castles. Set on two islands and surrounded by broad moats, it looks especially striking when its walls are reflected in still water. Today it houses a museum, a café, and a busy program of exhibitions and family events.

History in brief

The Prince-Bishop of Münster built the castle shortly before 1271 as a stronghold against unruly local lords. He granted it as a fief to a family that later became the Droste zu Vischering, who still own the castle today. A fire in 1521 destroyed much of the main castle, and the rebuilding that followed added Renaissance features while keeping its fortified look. Since the 1970s, the district has run it as a museum and cultural center.

What to see

  • The main castle with a permanent exhibition on the castle and its residents from the 13th to the early 20th century.
  • The Knights' Hall, where a wall installation brings noble life around 1770 to life.
  • The outer castle with changing art and history exhibitions.
  • The moats and loop path, which you can walk for free at any time for the classic photo.

Plan 90 minutes to two hours for a visit. Café Reitstall serves coffee, cake, and light meals during opening hours.

How to get to Vischering Castle

The castle is also a popular stop for cyclists on the 100 Castles Route through the Münsterland.
