About this place

Phantasialand in Brühl, between Cologne and Bonn, is one of Germany's most popular theme parks and is famous for its richly themed worlds. Instead of rides lined up in open fields, roller coasters like Taron, Black Mamba and F.L.Y. weave through rocky canyons, half-timbered villages and steampunk streets. With more than two million visitors a year, it is a top day trip from Cologne for families and thrill seekers alike.

Where it is and how to get there

The park is at Berggeiststraße 31–41 in Brühl, a small town just south of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia. Cologne Bonn Airport and Düsseldorf Airport are the nearest international airports.

By public transit, take the Line 18 light rail between Cologne and Bonn to Brühl Mitte, or regional trains RE5, RB26 or RB48 to Brühl station. A shuttle bus runs from both stops to the park during the main season (€6 round trip). Local and regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket. Drivers should use the A553, exit 2 Brühl-Süd; parking costs €8 per day.

A short history

Phantasialand opened on April 30, 1967, as a small fairy-tale forest on the site of a former lignite pit. Its founders were showman Gottlieb Löffelhardt and puppeteer Richard Schmidt. Over the decades it grew into a full theme park; the park area itself covers only about 12 hectares, which makes its density of rides and theming remarkable. In 2023 it welcomed about 2.1 million visitors.

What you will see

  • Berlin, with the steampunk area Rookburgh and the flying coaster F.L.Y. (2020)
  • Mystery, home to the rocky village of Klugheim, the launched coaster Taron (2016) and the 65-meter Mystery Castle drop tower
  • Deep in Africa, with the inverted coaster Black Mamba (2006)
  • Mexico, with the water ride Chiapas and the mine train Colorado Adventure
  • China Town and Fantasy, with family rides such as River Quest and Maus au Chocolat

The park also runs three themed hotels and the Fantissima dinner show.

  • From November 14, 2026, to January 24, 2027, the Wintertraum winter season runs daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (closed December 24, 25 and January 1).
  • Tickets are sold online only, with date-based dynamic pricing; there are no ticket booths at the gate. Advance Wintertraum tickets start at €30.
  • Children up to age 3 enter free with proof of age.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you love detailed theming. Plan a full day and arrive before 10 a.m. to reach the headline coasters before lines build up. Wagons and bike trailers are not allowed, and strollers have size limits. Kids face minimum height limits on the big coasters, so check them in advance. A good strategy is to head to the far side of the park first, since many guests start near the Berlin entrance. During Wintertraum the park is decorated for the holidays and offers ice skating in the Berlin area; check the winter ride list online, since not every attraction runs in the cold season. Combine your trip with a day in Cologne, whose famous cathedral is just a short train ride away.
