About this place

Övelgönne is a small riverside district in Hamburg-Othmarschen with a wide sandy beach, a museum harbor and captains' houses right on the water. Here you can watch huge container ships glide past, stroll along the Elbe beach and look at historic ships. It is one of the nicest spots on the Elbe in Hamburg and combines well with a ride on the harbor ferries.

History and character

Övelgönne was first mentioned in 1674 and was an independent rural municipality until 1890, then part of Altona until 1938. Where the name comes from is disputed, and the spelling "Övelgönne" or "Oevelgönne" varies. In 1925 and 1926 there was a seaplane base here on an early air route to Dresden. Shipyards once stood on the beach.

In the Alte Lotsenhaus, a pilots' fraternity was founded in 1745, and it is one of Hamburg's oldest inns. On the beach lies a boulder called "Der alte Schwede" weighing about 217 tons, which was recovered from the Elbe in 1999.

What to see

  • Museum harbor: a private association preserves historic vessels here, including cutters, barges, tugboats and cranes.
  • The Elbe beach: good for walking, jogging and grilling. Swimming in the Elbe is risky because of currents and the suction of large ships; Hamburg Tourism explicitly warns about this at the Blankenese beach.
  • The Elbe trail: from here you can walk or cycle along the river toward Blankenese.
  • Captains' houses: the narrow houses on the riverbank give the district its character.

Planning your visit

Allow one to two hours for the beach, the museum harbor and a walk; this is our estimate. If you stop at a restaurant, plan more time. It is best on dry days, because everything takes place outdoors.

Admission and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The beach and riverbank are free to visit. We did not check opening hours of restaurants or the museum harbor.

How to get there

The most pleasant way is harbor ferry line 62 from the Landungsbrücken (pier 3). Older sources say it runs about every 15 minutes and takes about 11 minutes to Neumühlen/Övelgönne; check the current HVV timetable. By bus, take line 112 from Altona station to the last stop, Neumühlen/Övelgönne, about nine minutes according to an older source. Bikes can be taken on the ferry. We could not confirm parking details.

Nearby

Upstream lies the Blankenese Elbe beach and its stair quarter, and the Landungsbrücken with the Rickmer Rickmers and the Cap San Diego can be reached by ferry.
