About this place

Kriebstein Castle in Saxony is one of the best-preserved late Gothic knight's castles in Germany. It sits on a rock spur high above the Zschopau river, with a keep about 45 meters tall, and houses a museum with rooms, murals and furnishings from the late Gothic period to the 19th century. It is a good stop if you want a medieval castle that feels authentic, away from the better-known Bavarian sights, and it works as a day trip from Dresden or Chemnitz.

Why it is special

A charter of 1384 mentions that Dietrich von Beerwalde was building the castle, and he is credited with most of the present complex, including the keep, the chapel and the ring wall with its gatehouse. The keep was finished around 1399. The Schleinitz family expanded the castle from 1465, and the von Arnim family owned it from 1825 until 1945, giving it a neo-Gothic renovation in 1866 to 1868. After expropriation in 1945 a museum opened in 1949, and the Free State of Saxony has owned the castle since 1993. Film fans may recognize it from "The Grand Budapest Hotel". It is also a stop on the Lutherweg Sachsen trail.

What to see

Look for the keep, the Gothic hall and the late Gothic kitchen, plus the chapel and painted interiors. The columned hall and the well room are step-free. An interactive game called "Lüftet die Geheimnisse der Ritterburg" costs 30 euros for two players plus 15 euros for each additional player, up to four, with museum admission included. Booking details are on the castle website.

As of October 2026, until November 1: Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Mondays except holidays. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. The castle is closed for winter from November 2, 2026, to February 5, 2027, and opens Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the winter school break from February 6 to 21, 2027. Adults pay 8 euros, reduced tickets are 7 euros and children aged 6 to 16 pay 1 euro. A combination ticket with Mildenstein Castle, valid for three days, costs 14 euros. Admission with the SchlösserlandKarte is free.

How to get there

The address is Kriebsteiner Straße 7, 09648 Kriebstein. The castle is about 4 kilometers from Waldheim. By car, leave the A4 at Hainichen (about 10 kilometers) or the A14 at Döbeln/Nord (about 15 kilometers toward Waldheim) and follow the signs for "Burg Kriebstein / Talsperre Kriebstein". All car parks are run by the municipality and charge fees. Trains from Dresden and Chemnitz to Waldheim run on Saturdays, followed by a walk of about 5 kilometers, so a car is the simpler option. Check Deutsche Bahn and regional timetables.

Accessibility and dogs

Wheelchair users may need help on the paved courtyard and at height differences. Dogs are not allowed in the museum rooms.
