About this place

The old town of Celle is one of Germany's most complete half-timbered townscapes: around the market square, the Stechbahn and Zöllnerstraße, the town counts nearly 500 timber-framed houses with painted facades, carved beams and gilded inscriptions. A white ducal palace and a baroque church complete the picture. Because Celle came through World War II almost unscathed, the streets feel authentic rather than rebuilt, making it an easy and rewarding day trip from Hanover or Hamburg.

Where it is and how to get there

Celle sits on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Hanover and roughly 60 miles from Hamburg. It lies on the main rail line between the two cities, and Intercity and ICE trains stop regularly; regional Metronom trains and the Hanover S-Bahn also serve the town, so regional services are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From the station, the CeBus "Innenstadt-Hüpfer" shuttle runs every 15 minutes to Schlossplatz at the edge of the old town. Hanover Airport is about a 35-minute drive away.

A short history

Celle was laid out as a planned town from 1292 at a ford across the Aller River. From 1378 to 1705 it served as a ducal residence, and the Guelph (Welf) dynasty that ruled here is the same family that later gave Britain its Hanoverian kings, starting with George I. After 1705 the court moved to Hanover, and Celle became a town of judges and civil servants. As early as 1907 it passed one of Germany's first local rules to protect its half-timbered houses.

Things to do in Celle's old town

  • Old Town Hall: its Weser Renaissance north gable dates from 1579; the trompe-l'oeil facade painting is a 17th-century design restored after its rediscovery.
  • Stechbahn: a former jousting ground framed by the town hall, the town church and a long row of timber-framed facades.
  • Hoppener Haus: the showpiece house of 1532, covered in carved figures and mythical creatures.
  • Kalandgasse: a narrow lane with the old Latin school from the early 1600s.
  • St. Mary's Church: a baroque interior with ducal tombs; in summer you can climb 235 steps to a viewing level 52 meters up the tower.

Tours and tips

Wandering the streets is free and possible at any time. The town's public walking tour lasts about 90 minutes and starts at the bridge in front of the palace; from May to October it runs daily, in April and November on weekends, and costs €10 for adults (as of October 2026). The tour is advertised in German, so ask the tourist office on the market square about English options. Allow two to three hours for the old town, or a full day if you add the palace and museums. The Christmas market makes December especially atmospheric.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you want a compact, walkable German town without the crowds of the Romantic Road. Nearby you can visit Celle Palace with its residence museum and a theater founded in 1674, the Bomann Museum, the 1740 synagogue, the French Garden just south of the center, and the heathland of the Lüneburg Heath north of town.
