Pelicans, parrots and secretary birds rather than just falcons and eagles: the flight show is the highlight of a day at Walsrode World Bird Park, the largest bird park in the world. On 24 hectares at the northern edge of Walsrode live around 4,000 birds of some 650 species from every continent and climate zone, making it one of the most species-rich zoos anywhere.
It started small. In 1962 local merchant Fritz Geschke set up a private breeding station for pheasants and waterfowl. His son-in-law Wolf W. Brehm took over in 1964 and expanded rapidly, especially in the 1970s. The 2,100 m² Paradise Hall opened in 1968, followed by the free-flight hall and a penguin enclosure; a tropical forest hall was added for Expo 2000. After financial difficulties the park changed hands several times and has been called Weltvogelpark since 2010. The new operators introduced flight shows and feedings, now among the most popular attractions.
Opening hours vary by day and season; check the calendar online. Gate prices: adults €32.90, children 3–12 €24.90. Online from €22.90 for adults and €17.90 for children, on "Smart Days" from €18.90. Dogs are not allowed, but the park provides free kennels.
Satnav: Am Vogelpark, 29699 Walsrode. From the A27 take exit Walsrode West, from the A7 exit Bad Fallingbostel. Around 4,000 free parking spaces.
Buy tickets online, check the show times first and plan your route around them. Allow at least five hours and wear good shoes, as the park lies on a slope.
