About this place

Schloss Drachenburg in Königswinter looks like a castle straight out of a fairy tale: perched halfway up the Drachenfels hill, it bristles with towers, turrets and lavish halls high above the Rhine. Built in the 1880s, it is one of Germany's finest examples of Romantic-era castle architecture, with restored interiors, a lookout tower and a hillside park. Combined with the Drachenfels summit, it makes a perfect day trip from Bonn or Cologne.

Where it is and how to get there

The castle sits above the town of Königswinter, on the east bank of the Rhine about 10 km southeast of Bonn and roughly an hour by train from Cologne. Light rail line 66 runs from Bonn to Königswinter, and regional trains stop at Königswinter station; both are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From the valley station, the historic Drachenfelsbahn cog railway stops right at the castle gate, or you can walk up the Eselsweg (Donkey Path) in about 30 minutes. Paid parking is available at lot P6 on Oberweingartenweg, about a 10-minute walk from the valley station.

History

Schloss Drachenburg was built from 1882 to 1884 as a private villa for Stephan von Sarter, a financier who made his fortune in Paris and rarely stayed here. Its architects blended Gothic Revival and Renaissance Revival styles into a showpiece of 19th-century wealth. The castle later served as a Catholic boarding school, a Nazi elite school and a railway training school, and was damaged by artillery at the end of World War II. After years of neglect and threats of demolition, it was rescued by a private owner in 1971 and has belonged to the NRW Foundation since 1990, which restored it between 1995 and 2010 at a cost of about €27 million.
