About this place

The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is one of Europe's best-known venues for modern and contemporary art. Its original building between the cathedral and the Römerberg is being renovated for energy efficiency, so for now the Schirn presents its exhibitions in the former Dondorf printing works in Bockenheim. If you plan to see an exhibition, make sure you go to the right address and check what is on before you head out.

Where to find the Schirn right now

Until about 2028, the exhibitions are at Gabriel-Riesser-Weg 3 in Frankfurt-Bockenheim. The industrial building offers exhibition space on three floors plus an adjoining hall. Afterward, the Schirn is due to return to its home next to the Römer, a postmodern sandstone building that opened on February 28, 1986 and is famous for its glass-domed rotunda.

What to expect

The Schirn has no permanent collection but stages changing special exhibitions. In fall 2026 it shows the first major Leonor Fini exhibition in Germany, with around 100 works including paintings, drawings, photographs and objects. Its biggest hits have included the Chagall show of 2023, the Munch exhibition of 2012 and the Magritte show of 2017, and the venue recorded 502,961 visitors in 2023. Allow one to two hours.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, the Schirn is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and until 10 p.m. on Thursdays. Ticket sales and admission end 30 minutes before closing. Admission is currently 7 euros, 5 euros reduced, or 14 euros for a family ticket. Children under 8 enter free. On the first Friday of each month you get two tickets for the price of one, available at the box office. The museum is closed on December 24, 2026. A guided tour in English takes place on selected Thursdays at 6 p.m. for 15 euros including admission, with a limited number of participants.

How to get there

The easiest way is the U-Bahn: lines U4, U6 and U7 stop at Bockenheimer Warte station, about a 200-meter walk from the venue. Tram line 16 and several bus lines also stop there. The Deutschlandticket is valid on these local lines. If you drive, the museum recommends the Ladengalerie Bockenheimer Warte car park on Adalbertstraße, which takes coins only.

Accessibility and families

All exhibitions are reachable by elevator, and wheelchairs and strollers can be borrowed on site. The Schirn is certified under the German "Reisen für Alle" (Travel for All) system.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if there is an exhibition that interests you; the Schirn is known for large thematic shows rather than permanent displays. Check the current program on the official website before going.

Nearby

The Bockenheimer Depot is next to Bockenheimer Warte station, and the Römerberg and Kleinmarkthalle are in the old town.
