About this place

The Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen (Lake Dwellings Museum) on the northern shore of Lake Constance is one of the most memorable things to do in southern Germany: wooden boardwalks lead you through reconstructed Stone Age and Bronze Age villages standing on stilts in the water. Founded in 1922, it is considered the oldest archaeological open-air museum in Germany. It brings to life the prehistoric pile dwellings that UNESCO lists as World Heritage, making it a great stop for families and history lovers.

Where it is and how to get there

Unteruhldingen is part of the municipality of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, between Meersburg and Überlingen on the German side of Lake Constance (Bodensee). The nearest larger airport is Friedrichshafen; Zurich and Stuttgart are the main international gateways, about 1.5 to 2 hours away by car.

  • By train: Uhldingen-Mühlhofen station is about a 25-minute signposted walk from the museum. Regional buses, including the year-round Seelinie 7395 and seasonal "Erlebnisbus" lines, get you closer. Regional trains and buses are covered by the Deutschlandticket.
  • By boat: The most scenic option. Lake Constance passenger ships stop at Unteruhldingen harbor, just a few minutes' walk from the entrance.
  • By car: Leave the B 31 at the "Pfahlbauten" exit. Public lots P1 (about an 8-minute walk) and P2 (about 15 minutes) serve the museum; they fill up quickly on summer weekends.

What makes it special

In 2011 UNESCO added the "Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps" to the World Heritage List, covering 111 sites in six countries. Most of that heritage lies invisible underwater or in lake mud, so the museum acts as its showcase. The museum itself consists of reconstructions, but the listed Unteruhldingen-Stollenwiesen site sits right off the shore.

The grounds now hold 23 pile houses. The oldest group, a Stone Age village modeled on finds from nearby Sipplingen, was built in 1938–1940. Later additions recreate houses from Hornstaad-Hörnle and Arbon-Bleiche, and a Bronze Age village based on Unteruhldingen-Stollenwiesen was completed in 2002. Guides and info points explain fishing, cooking, weaving and tool making. Indoors, the ARCHAEORAMA multimedia show and the newer museum building display original finds; exhibit texts can be read in English or French via NFC on your smartphone.

Up to 300,000 visitors come each year, and more than 16 million have visited since 1922.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are touring Lake Constance or traveling with kids. Plan 1.5 to 3 hours. The site is largely wheelchair accessible, with ramps, boardwalks and an elevator, though not every hut can be entered. Go early in the day in summer to avoid crowds on the narrow boardwalks.

Nearby

  • Birnau Pilgrimage Church, a Baroque landmark above the lake, a few miles toward Überlingen.
  • Meersburg, with its medieval castle and old town, next door.
  • Mainau Island, the "flower island," reachable by boat.
  • Salem Monkey Mountain and Salem Abbey inland.

A day trip from Zurich or Stuttgart easily combines the lake dwellings with Meersburg.
