About this place

The Königssee in Bavaria's Berchtesgaden region is one of the most beautiful lakes in Germany, a deep, emerald-green, fjord-like lake hemmed in by sheer mountain walls. Gliding across it in a quiet electric boat to the red-domed chapel of St. Bartholomä, with the towering Watzmann behind, is one of the classic things to do in the Bavarian Alps and an easy day trip from Salzburg or Munich.

Why it's special

The lake lies inside Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany's only national park in the Alps. It's up to 190 meters (623 feet) deep and known for exceptionally clean water. To protect it, private motorboats and diving are not allowed, and the passenger boats have run on electricity since 1909, keeping the valley remarkably quiet.

What to see and do

  • The echo: midway, the boat stops at the Echo Wall, where the boatman plays a few notes on a trumpet or flugelhorn and the cliffs bounce the melody back several times.
  • St. Bartholomä: after about 35 minutes, you reach the pilgrimage church on its peninsula. Behind it rises the Watzmann East Face, nearly 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) high, the tallest rock wall in the Eastern Alps. A trail leads to the Ice Chapel at its base.
  • Salet and the Obersee: about an hour from the start, Salet is the gateway to the smaller Obersee lake and its waterfall backdrop. In 2026 boats to Salet run until October 11.
  • Malerwinkel viewpoint: a short walk from the village gives you the classic view down the lake for free.

Boat tickets and schedule

As of October 2026, according to the boat operator (Bayerische Seenschifffahrt):

  • Round trip to St. Bartholomä: 23.40 euros (one way 11.70 euros)
  • Round trip to Salet: 29.80 euros (one way 14.90 euros), with a stop at St. Bartholomä possible
  • Buy tickets at the pier (cash or card) or online.

Boats run year-round on summer and winter timetables, but fog, storms, or high water can cause cancellations. On busy days the operator advises heading out before 10:30 am and starting back by 2:30 pm. There are no restrooms on board, so use the facilities at the pier before you go.

How to get there

The boats leave from the village of Königssee in the municipality of Schönau am Königssee, in the far southeastern corner of Germany, close to Salzburg in Austria.

  • By train and bus: Take a regional train to Berchtesgaden (via Freilassing), then bus 840, 841, or 843 to Königssee. The pier is about a five-minute walk from the bus stop. Regional trains and local buses in Bavaria are generally covered by the Deutschlandticket.
  • By car: There's a large paid parking lot about five minutes on foot from the pier.

From Munich, plan on roughly two and a half to three hours each way by train, so start early.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely. Even on a cloudy day the scenery is dramatic. Allow at least three hours for the boat trip and St. Bartholomä, and a full day if you add the Obersee or a hike. Early summer and fall are ideal; midsummer is very busy. Nearby, the Jenner cable car offers views from above, and Berchtesgaden has a historic salt mine and the Obersalzberg documentation center about Nazi history.
