About this place

Neuzelle Abbey in eastern Brandenburg is one of the few fully preserved monastery complexes in Europe, often called the "Baroque miracle on the Oder." Behind the bright yellow facade of the abbey church lies an exuberant interior of stucco, gilding and ceiling frescoes that you would sooner expect in Bavaria or Bohemia. Add a Gothic cloister, a museum of Baroque Passion scenery and Brandenburg's only Baroque garden, and Neuzelle makes a memorable day trip from Berlin near the Polish border.

History in brief

Margrave Henry the Illustrious founded the Cistercian abbey in 1268. In 1429 Hussite raiders attacked it and killed about 20 monks. Neuzelle stayed Catholic while the surrounding region turned Protestant, and from 1650 Bohemian builders transformed its Gothic church into a Baroque showpiece. Prussia dissolved the abbey in 1817 and turned it into a secular foundation. After decades of state ownership in East Germany, the Stift Neuzelle foundation has cared for the site since 1996. Cistercian monks from Heiligenkreuz in Austria returned to the area in 2018 and are building a new monastery nearby.

How to get there

From Berlin, take the RE 1 regional train to Frankfurt (Oder) and change to the RE 10 or RB 43 to Neuzelle; the Deutschlandticket covers the whole trip. By car, take the A 10 and A 12 toward Frankfurt (Oder), then follow signs via Müllrose or the B 112. Cyclists on the Oder-Neisse cycle route reach the abbey after a 3-kilometer detour. Payment is in euros.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you love Baroque art or want to see a side of Germany few international visitors reach. Plan three to four hours for the churches, museums and garden. Guided tours are offered mainly in German and should be booked through the local visitor information office. Combine your visit with a walk in the nearby Schlaube Valley nature park.
