About this place

Tropical Islands near Krausnick, south of Berlin, is Europe's largest tropical resort: a gigantic dome housing a sandy beach, a warm lagoon, a rainforest and water slides, all kept at summer temperatures year-round. The resort fills a former airship hangar that ranks among the largest self-supporting halls in the world. It is a popular escape from the Berlin winter and one of the most unusual places to visit in Brandenburg.

From Airship Hangar to Tropical Resort

The hall was built around 2000 by CargoLifter, a company that planned to construct giant cargo airships here. After the company went bankrupt, the Malaysian Tanjong group bought the hangar and turned it into an indoor resort, which opened on December 19, 2004. Since 2019 it has been owned by the Spanish leisure group Parques Reunidos.

The scale is staggering: the hall is 360 meters long, 210 meters wide and 107 meters high (about 1,180 by 690 by 350 feet). More than a million people visit each year.

Things to Do at Tropical Islands

  • Tropical Sea: A 140-meter pool with a 200-meter sandy beach and hundreds of loungers.
  • Bali Lagoon: Warmer water around 30 °C (86 °F), waterfalls, fountains and two slides.
  • Rainforest: About 50,000 plants from more than 600 species, with replica buildings from tropical countries.
  • AMAZONIA: An outdoor pool area opened in 2016, with water around 31 °C.
  • Slide tower and sauna area: The sauna and spa cost extra or come with a combo ticket.

Inside, the air stays at about 26 °C (79 °F), so swimwear and light clothes are all you need.

Tickets and Opening Hours

The resort is open 365 days a year. Day tickets are valid from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; some attractions have their own hours. As of October 2026, online day tickets start at €34.90, rising to €69 depending on the date. At the gate, adults pay €55.90 on regular days (more on peak days), teens 13–17 €48.50 and children 4–12 €45.50; kids under 4 are free. An online family ticket for two adults and up to three children starts at €135.90. Booking online is almost always cheaper, and some tickets are online-only.

How to Get to Tropical Islands from Berlin

The resort lies about 60 km (37 miles) south of central Berlin, roughly 50 km from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). By car, take the A13 toward Dresden and exit at Staakow; parking costs €7–8 per 24 hours. By rail, regional trains run from Berlin to Brand Tropical Islands station, and the Deutschlandticket is valid on them; a free shuttle bus then takes you to the entrance. The shuttle is timed to the trains but does not wait if a train is late.

Is Tropical Islands Worth Visiting?

If you are traveling with kids or visiting Berlin in the colder months, it can be a fun full-day trip. Arrive early on weekends and during school holidays, when loungers fill up fast. Overnight options range from tents inside the hall to hotel rooms, and overnight guests can access the hall around the clock. Bring flip-flops and a towel, and budget for food and drinks inside the resort. Avoid the German fall break (mid-October to early November), when peak prices apply at the gate.
