About this place

Flensburg Harbor and the old town around it are the maritime heart of Flensburg, Germany's border city on the Baltic Sea just south of Denmark. At the head of the Flensburg Fjord, historic sailing ships, the steamship Alexandra and old merchants' warehouses line the waterfront, while narrow lanes lead up to hidden courtyards, churches and rum houses. If you are looking for things to do in northern Germany away from the big cities, this harbor is a relaxed and atmospheric choice.

Where it is and how to get there

Flensburg sits at the very top of Germany in Schleswig-Holstein, about 160 km (100 miles) north of Hamburg and only a few miles from the Danish border. Regional trains from Hamburg take roughly two hours, and the Deutschlandticket is valid. From Flensburg station, walk about 15 to 20 minutes to the harbor or take a city bus to the central bus station right by the Hafenspitze, the square at the tip of the harbor. Drivers arrive via the A7; there are parking lots and garages along the Schiffbrücke quay, though they fill up on summer weekends. The harbor and old town are free to explore at any time.

Rum, trade and the sea

Flensburg grew up around its harbor in the 12th century. After the decline of the Hanseatic League, it became the largest trading town in the Danish realm, and Danish culture is still very present today: the city is the center of the Danish minority in Southern Schleswig. In the late 18th century, local merchants joined the West Indies trade, sailing to the then-Danish Virgin Islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. Rum shipped back to Flensburg was blended and refined here, and at the peak the city had more than 200 rum houses. That legacy earned Flensburg its nickname as Germany's rum town.

What to see

  • Historic Harbor and Museum Harbor: on the west bank, former working sailboats, classic yachts and steam and motor vessels are moored along the Schiffbrücke. The Museum Harbor association was founded by private ship owners in 1979.
  • Steamship Alexandra: part of the harbor since 1908, she is the city's maritime landmark.
  • Flensburg Maritime Museum: housed in the former customs warehouse, with the Rum Museum in a multimedia cellar. Check current hours and prices directly with the museum.
  • The old town: the brick Nordertor gate from 1595 is the city's symbol, the tiny houses of the Oluf-Samson-Gang run down to the water, and old merchants' courtyards around Rote Strasse hide shops and cafés. Don't miss the churches of St. Nicholas and St. Mary.
  • Rum and Sugar Mile: a signposted walk with 20 stops through the old town. The Johannsen rum house, the oldest still in operation, offers tours and tastings.

Events and practical tips

The harbor hosts regular festivals such as Dampf Rundum for steam enthusiasts, the Rum Regatta for classic sailboats and a fish market; in mid-October, traditional ships sail out for the Apple Voyage. As of October 2026, the tourist information office at Nikolaistrasse 8 is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and can give you event dates and boat tour options.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially as a day trip from Hamburg or Kiel, or combined with Denmark. About 10 km (6 miles) north lies Glücksburg Castle, a picture-perfect moated palace on the fjord. To the south, Schleswig offers Gottorf Castle and the UNESCO-listed Viking site of Hedeby. On the east bank of the harbor, the Sonwik marina occupies a former naval area and is pleasant for a waterside stroll.
