About this place

Föhr is Germany's largest island that can only be reached by boat or plane, and its mild climate has earned it the nickname "Frisian Caribbean". This green North Sea island offers a long sandy beach at Wyk, thatched Frisian villages, medieval churches with "talking" gravestones and even an important art museum. The ferry from Dagebüll takes roughly an hour, so it works as a day trip or a longer stay.

Where it is and how to get there

Föhr lies in the North Sea off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, near the Danish border. Take Deutsche Bahn to Niebüll, then the local train to Dagebüll-Mole station right at the ferry pier. Drivers use the A7 and B199 and either reserve a car space on the ferry or park at the island car park in Dagebüll, with a free shuttle to the pier. The W.D.R. ferry runs independently of the tides, and a fast catamaran, the Adler Rüm Hart, makes the crossing to Föhr in only 25 minutes.

Why it is special

Föhr is 12.5 km long and up to 8.5 km wide, with about 8,500 residents in 16 villages. Wyk auf Föhr is the only town. The highest point is just 13.2 meters above sea level. About 2,000 people speak Fering, a North Frisian dialect, and the nearby Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2009. A sandy beach of about 15 km runs from Wyk toward the west coast.

What to see

  • Wyk auf Föhr, with its beach promenade and the Dr. Carl Häberlin Frisian Museum
  • St. Johannis church in Nieblum, the island's largest church, built in the 12th century and nicknamed the "Frisian Cathedral"; its churchyard tells stories of sea captains and whalers
  • St. Laurentii church in Süderende from the 13th century, known for its "talking" gravestones
  • Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum, with art from the 19th to 21st centuries focused on the sea and coast
  • Oldsum, with thatched houses and a windmill
