About this place

The Calmont near Bremm in Germany's Mosel Valley is often called the steepest vineyard in Europe, and it offers one of the most famous views in the country. From the summit cross you look straight down onto the Bremm Mosel loop, where the river makes a near-perfect horseshoe around the ruins of Stuben Abbey. A via ferrata through the vines makes it a favorite for adventurous hikers.

Where it is and how to get there

The Calmont rises between the wine villages of Bremm and Ediger-Eller in Rhineland-Palatinate, roughly 60 km southwest of Koblenz and about 15 km upriver from Cochem. Regional trains on the Koblenz–Trier line stop at Ediger-Eller station, and the Deutschlandticket is valid. Bus 711, nicknamed the "Calmont Express," runs from Bullay and Cochem. Driving from Frankfurt takes around two and a half hours; there is parking in Bremm, Ediger-Eller and Neef.

Why it is special

The hill reaches 380 meters, almost 300 meters above the Mosel, and its vineyard slopes exceed 65 degrees. The Bremmer Calmont site covers 33 hectares and is known for Riesling grown almost entirely by hand on narrow terraces. Near the summit, archaeologists uncovered a Gallo-Roman mountain sanctuary from the 2nd to 4th centuries, and a temple was reconstructed in 2009.

The view and the via ferrata

The summit cross, a 12-meter memorial from around 1970, stands west of the summit and is the classic viewpoint over the river loop. A hut next to it serves local wine from Easter through October.

The Calmont Klettersteig, opened by the German Alpine Club in 2002, uses ladders, steps and steel cables to cross the steep slopes between Eller and Bremm. The regional tourism site lists the loop with the ridge-trail return at about 9 km and three hours, rated moderate. You need sure footing, a head for heights and sturdy shoes, but usually no climbing gear. Only go in dry weather and avoid it when thunderstorms threaten.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you love hiking and wine. September and October bring cooler temperatures and golden vines at harvest time. If the via ferrata sounds too much, simply walk up to the summit cross for the view. Combine it with a wine tasting in Bremm and a visit to Cochem for a perfect day trip from Koblenz. Admission is free (as of October 2026).
