About this place

Bernkastel-Kues is one of the most charming wine towns on the Moselle River and one of the best things to see in the Moselle Valley. Its medieval market square is lined with colorful half-timbered houses, a castle ruin watches over the old town, and some of Germany's most famous Riesling grows on the steep slopes above. Across the river, Kues celebrates the Renaissance philosopher Nicholas of Cusa. It is a perfect stop on any Moselle road trip.

Where it is and how to get there

Bernkastel-Kues lies in Rhineland-Palatinate, in the middle of the Moselle wine region, about 30 miles (50 km) from Trier.

  • By train and bus: The town has no train station. The nearest are Wittlich Hauptbahnhof (9 miles/14 km) and Traben-Trarbach, with connecting buses. The Deutschlandticket covers regional trains and local buses.
  • By car: The town is on the B53 road along the Moselle. Parking is available along the riverbank.
  • By air: Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, served by budget airlines, is about 22 miles (35 km) away. Despite its name, it is far from Frankfurt itself.

Why it is special

Bernkastel received town rights in 1291, and Kues on the opposite bank was the birthplace of Nicholas of Cusa (1401), one of the great thinkers of the 15th century. The two towns merged in 1905. The Moselle Valley is famous for steep vineyards and Riesling, and Bernkastel's Doctor vineyard is one of its best-known sites. According to legend, a glass of its wine cured an ailing Archbishop of Trier.

What to see

  • Market square: Half-timbered houses from the 15th to 17th centuries, the St. Michael's Fountain (1606) and the Renaissance town hall (1608).
  • Spitzhäuschen: A tiny, top-heavy house from 1416 that widens as it rises, now a wine tavern.
  • Landshut Castle: A ruin above town with sweeping views of the Moselle valley.
  • St. Nicholas Hospital: A medieval almshouse founded by Nicholas of Cusa that still houses senior residents and a famous historic library. Guided tours run on Tuesdays and Fridays.
  • Birthplace of Nicholas of Cusa: A small exhibition on the philosopher's life.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially for wine lovers and photographers. The old town is free to explore, and half a day is enough for the main sights; add a castle hike, a wine tasting or a river cruise to fill a full day. The biggest event is the Middle Moselle Wine Festival around the first Sunday in September, and a Christmas market fills the square in Advent. Visit on a weekday for fewer crowds.
