About this place

Satzvey Castle (Burg Satzvey) in Mechernich, on the northern edge of the Eifel hills, is regarded as the best-preserved moated castle in the Rhineland in terms of original medieval fabric. With its pointed towers, twin-towered gatehouse, and reflective moat, it looks like a storybook castle. Today it is best known for knights' tournaments, seasonal markets, and a Christmas market, and it is an easy day trip from Cologne or Bonn.

A short history

The site goes back to a moated manor of the 12th century, home to local lords who managed church estates. The Gothic main house dates from 1396, and the gatehouse with its twin towers was added in the 15th century. In 1882 the castle passed to Count Dietrich Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht, who restored and expanded it. Damaged in World War II, it was repaired by the family that still owns it, the Counts Beissel von Gymnich, who opened it to the public from the late 1970s to fund its upkeep.

Things to do at Satzvey Castle

  • Walk around the moat for the classic reflection photo.
  • Explore the courtyards, with restaurants, a castle bakery, and small shops; entry is free year-round except during ticketed events.
  • Join a guided tour of about 40 minutes through the castle's halls.
  • Time your visit for an event: Halloween, St. Martin's market, or the Christmas market on Advent weekends.

How to get to Satzvey Castle

Satzvey is about 40 km southwest of Cologne. Regional train RB 24 on the Cologne–Euskirchen–Gerolstein line stops hourly at Satzvey station, a short walk from the castle, and the trip is covered by the Deutschlandticket. Drivers can park beside the estate farm on normal days; during events, use the signposted large parking lots at the edge of the village.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially on a weekend with a tour or during one of the events, when the castle feels most alive. On a quiet weekday you can still enjoy the courtyards and moat for free.
