About this place

Falkenstein Castle in the Harz Mountains is one of the most atmospheric medieval castles in Saxony-Anhalt. It stands on a rocky ridge high above the Selke Valley, surrounded by forest and a nature reserve. According to tradition, Eike von Repgow wrote the Sachsenspiegel here, the oldest German legal code. Today it houses a museum and is a rewarding stop on the Romanesque Route, a good day trip from Quedlinburg or Halle.

Getting there

The castle lies in the eastern Lower Harz, near the village of Pansfelde. You cannot drive to the gate. Public parking at "Gartenhaus" is about 1.9 km away, and from there you walk through the nature reserve, or take a small tourist train or a castle taxi run by a private operator. Regional buses 240 (from Aschersleben or Quedlinburg) and 243 (from Harzgerode) serve the area. Check the current timetables on the castle website.

Why it is special

The castle is thought to date from between 1120 and 1180. After 1220 the Sachsenspiegel was written here, a milestone in German legal history. From 1437 the castle belonged to the von der Asseburg family until their expropriation after World War II. A museum has been here since 1946. Highlights are the 31 meter keep, the dining hall (Rittersaal) with its coffered ceiling and stained glass, and the courtyard with views over the valley.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

From April to October the castle is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from November to March 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing, and it is closed on Mondays (except public holidays) and on December 24. Adults pay EUR 6.50, reduced EUR 4.50, and a family ticket is EUR 17. You can buy tickets online. A special exhibition of watercolors of forest animals runs from September 5 to December 5, 2026.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you enjoy castles with a real museum and a scenic setting rather than a crowded landmark. Plan two to three hours including the walk from the parking lot. Autumn colors make the valley especially pretty. Guided tours are offered for groups of 10 or more by prior booking; the website does not list English tours, so ask in advance.

Practical tips

The castle is only partly accessible: wheelchair users can reach the restaurant and the main courtyard over cobblestones, but the exhibition rooms are reached by steps. Leashed dogs are allowed up to the castle restaurant. Wear comfortable shoes for the path.

Nearby

The Selke Valley lies directly below, and Quedlinburg, with its UNESCO-listed old town and the collegiate church, is the obvious partner for a day in this part of the Harz.
