Berlin: What Vanished – and Came Back

„The eighth wonder: a bowl too big for its museum.”

About this place

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) on Museum Island is the largest Protestant church in Germany and one of the most striking landmarks in the city center. Under its huge green dome you'll find a lavish main church, a historic organ with more than 7,000 pipes, the burial vault of the Hohenzollern dynasty, and a walkway around the dome with views across Berlin. It's an easy highlight to combine with the museums next door.

A brief history

The current building was commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II, who wanted a Protestant answer to St. Peter's in Rome and St. Paul's in London. Designed by Julius Raschdorff in the Neo-Renaissance style, it was built from 1894 and consecrated on February 27, 1905. Earlier churches had stood on the same site since the 15th century.

An air raid in May 1944 badly damaged the dome. Reconstruction under East Germany started only in 1975 and simplified the building: the dome and towers were lowered, so the cathedral now stands 98 meters (322 feet) tall instead of the original 114. Interior work was completed in 1993.

What to see

  • The main church under the dome, a showpiece of marble, gilding, and mosaics.
  • The Sauer organ from 1905, with 7,269 pipes and 113 stops. Catch it during a service or concert if you can.
  • The Hohenzollern Crypt, where 94 members of Prussia's ruling family were laid to rest. It reopened in 2026 after renovation.
  • The dome walkway at about 50 meters (164 feet), reached by roughly 270 steps, with panoramic views over Museum Island and the TV Tower.
  • The cathedral museum, showing models and designs from the building's history.

How to get there

Berlin Cathedral is in Mitte, the historic heart of Berlin, about a 15-minute walk from the Brandenburg Gate along Unter den Linden.

  • Subway: U5 to Museumsinsel, a few minutes' walk.
  • S-Bahn: Hackescher Markt station, about 10 minutes on foot.
  • Bus: Lines 100 and 300 stop at Lustgarten; route 100 is a popular budget sightseeing ride across the city center.

All of these are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From BER airport, allow under an hour by train.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you climb the dome. Plan about an hour for the church, crypt, and museum, and up to two hours with the dome walk. The main church, crypt, museum, café, and shop are wheelchair accessible via elevators, but the dome walkway is not. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter.

Nearby

The cathedral sits on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, right next to the Altes Museum. Across the street is the Humboldt Forum in the rebuilt Berlin Palace, and the TV Tower and Nikolai Quarter are a short walk across the Spree River.
