About this place

The Asam Church (St. Johann Nepomuk) on Sendlinger Straße in Munich is one of the most striking Baroque churches in southern Germany. In the heart of the old town, a few minutes from Marienplatz, a narrow facade hides a tiny space packed with stucco, frescoes and gold. Entry is free, and it is a must for anyone who wants to see late Baroque at its most dramatic.

A church by the Asam brothers

Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam built the church between 1733 and 1746 next to Egid Quirin's own house. It was originally meant as a private chapel, but after public protests it was opened to everyone. It was consecrated on May 1, 1746. Art historians count it among the most important works of the two leading masters of southern German late Baroque.

The church was damaged in 1944 and 1945, and the interior was restored between 1975 and 1983. It was cleaned again in 2009, and in 2022 fragments of the facade fell, prompting discussion of further renovation.

What to see

  • The facade: A colorful, sculpted front squeezed between ordinary houses.
  • The interior: Only about 22 by 8 meters, but tall and steep; architecture, painting and sculpture merge, and the light grows toward the ceiling painting.
  • The ceiling fresco: Scenes from the life of Saint John Nepomuk.
  • The high altar: Two stories, topped by a Throne of Grace group and holding a relic of Saint John Nepomuk.
  • The confessionals: Seven of them, since Egid Quirin planned it as a confession church for young people.

Hours and admission (as of October 2026)

From April to October the church is open Monday to Thursday and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Fridays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. From November to March it closes one hour earlier. Admission is free, and donations for upkeep are welcome. It is still a working church, and sightseeing is not possible during Mass. Plan 15 to 30 minutes. These hours come from the city of Munich, not from the parish.

How to get there

The church is at Sendlinger Straße 32, 80331 Munich, in the pedestrian zone. The nearest stop is Sendlinger Tor (U1, U2, U3, U6), and Marienplatz is also a few minutes' walk. The Deutschlandticket covers local transit. The entrance has steps and is not step-free.

Nearby

Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt and the Frauenkirche are close by. The Asamhaus, where Egid Quirin lived, stands right next to the church.
