Dresden Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips
Table of contents

On Wednesday 25 November 2026 at 4pm, the 592nd Dresden Striezelmarkt opens on the Altmarkt square – according to the city of Dresden, Germany's oldest Christmas market. With what the city calls the world's largest Erzgebirge step pyramid, traditional wooden folk art from the Ore Mountains and the famous Dresden Christstollen, it's the heart of Advent in the Saxon capital. Around the Old Town more markets join in: in front of the Frauenkirche, in the medieval Stallhof courtyard and in the Neustadt district. Below: every Dresden date and opening time for 2026, a map and visitor tips.

Altmarkt, Neumarkt and Stallhof are just five to eight minutes apart on foot. For the Augustusmarkt, cross the Augustusbrücke bridge into the Neustadt – about 15 minutes from the Neumarkt.

The Striezelmarkt: what to see

The market takes its name from "Striezel", the old word for Dresden Christstollen. Locals call strolling around the market "striezeln". According to the city, more than 200 traders sell goods you won't find elsewhere in this form. Highlights named by the city:

  • The Erzgebirge step pyramid: 14.61 metres tall – the world's largest, says the city – with carved figures turning through the Christmas story.
  • The walk-through Schwibbogen: a giant candle arch you can walk under.
  • An XXL nativity scene beneath the main Christmas tree, which must be at least 23 metres tall.
  • A historic Ferris wheel with views over the stall roofs.
  • Show workshops where craftspeople from the Ore Mountains carve smoking men, nutcrackers and pyramids, plus one about Stollen baking.
  • A daily cultural programme on stage and in themed houses.

What to eat

  • Dresdner Christstollen: the genuine one carries the seal of the Dresden Stollen Protection Association. Many stalls sell it by the slice.
  • Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen: soft spiced gingerbread from Upper Lusatia.
  • Kräppelchen (small doughnuts) and glazed apples.
  • Glühwein in the Striezelmarkt mug, with a deposit.

What to take home

The classic souvenir is the Pflaumentoffel, a little edible figure made of dried prunes that's said to bring luck. For something lasting, look for Erzgebirge folk art – smoking men, angel and miner figures, candle arches.

The other markets

Advent on the Neumarkt

Set in front of the Frauenkirche, this historic market aims to look "as beautiful as in 1910", recreating stalls and scenery from 1830–1920 with traditional handmade goods. It's open daily until 10pm and continues after Christmas until 3 January 2027 (closed 24–26 December and 1 January) with shorter hours between the holidays.

Medieval Christmas in the Stallhof

In the stable courtyard of the Royal Palace, right behind the Procession of Princes mural, it's all jugglers, musicians, fire pits – and wooden hot tubs where you can soak while enjoying Advent (bookings are in high demand, says the organiser). Open 25 November–23 December daily 11am–9.30pm, then again for the "Rauhnächte" from 27–30 December and 2–6 January 2027.

Admission: at Advent weekends from Friday afternoon to Sunday and from 27–30 December, the organiser charges €5 for adults and €3 for children; pre-school children go free. On weekdays entry is free.

Augustusmarkt in the Neustadt

The Augustusmarkt fills the wide Hauptstraße between the Golden Rider statue and Albertplatz. It runs from 25 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, including New Year's Eve, and is closed 24–26 December and 1 January. Detailed 2026 hours hadn't been published when we checked.

An Advent day in Dresden: our suggestion

  1. 10am – Striezelmarkt: start on the Altmarkt while it's quiet; see the show workshops and the step pyramid, then buy Stollen and a Pflaumentoffel.
  2. 12pm – Frauenkirche and Neumarkt: five minutes' walk away. Climb the dome if you like, then browse the historic market on the Neumarkt (opens at 11am).
  3. 2pm – treasures in the palace: warm up in the Royal Palace; for the Green Vault it's worth booking a time slot in advance.
  4. 4pm – Procession of Princes and Stallhof: the Medieval Christmas with its fire pits looks best at dusk.
  5. 6pm – Brühl's Terrace: a short walk above the Elbe before dinner in the Old Town, or cross the Augustusbrücke to the Augustusmarkt in the Neustadt.

Practical tips for international visitors

Cash, cards and Pfand

Cards are increasingly accepted, but smaller stalls may be cash only – carry some coins and small notes. Hot drinks come in mugs with a deposit (Pfand) that you get back when you return the mug.

When to go

  • Opening day: the Striezelmarkt only opens at 4pm on 25 November.
  • Weekday mornings: from 10am the Altmarkt is much quieter – ideal for the show workshops.
  • Advent weekends: lots of coach groups; the Stallhof charges admission.
  • After Christmas: the Striezelmarkt is closed, but Neumarkt, Augustusmarkt and the Stallhof "Rauhnächte" carry on.

Getting there

Dresden Hauptbahnhof has direct trains from Berlin, Leipzig and Prague. From the station it's about 15 minutes on foot along Prager Straße to the Altmarkt, or take the tram to Altmarkt or Postplatz. The city notes that there's no organiser parking and traffic routing changes during the market – use public transport or park-and-ride.

With kids

The Ferris wheel, the pyramid and the show workshops are favourites on the Striezelmarkt; the Stallhof with its jugglers is fun too. With a pushchair, weekday visits before 3pm are easiest.

Accessibility

The Altmarkt is flat; the Stallhof and Neumarkt have historic cobblestones. The city published information on accessible and safe market visits in 2025.

Where to stay

The Old Town puts you between the markets; the Neustadt is often a little cheaper and full of bars. Book early for Advent weekends.

Gift idea: put Dresden on the wall with a personalised city poster.
