About this place

The Völklingen Ironworks (Völklinger Hütte) in Völklingen, Saarland, is a vast former ironworks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. It was the first industrial monument from the age of industrialization to receive that status, and it is described as the only fully preserved ironworks from that era anywhere in the world. Blast furnaces, pipes, catwalks and giant engine halls make it one of the most striking things to do in southwest Germany.

Where it is and why it matters

Völklingen lies on the Saar River, just west of Saarbrücken and close to the borders with France and Luxembourg. Founded in 1873 and taken over by the Röchling family in 1881, the plant became a major producer of pig iron for more than a century. Six blast furnaces, each about 27 meters (89 feet) tall, ran here until production stopped on July 4, 1986.

The site also tells a darker chapter of German history: in the two world wars, more than 12,000 people were forced to work here. French artist Christian Boltanski created a memorial installation for them on the grounds.

Things to do at the ironworks

More than seven kilometers (4+ miles) of visitor paths lead you through the complex:

  • Blower hall: enormous gas engines once pushed air into the furnaces; today the hall hosts major exhibitions.
  • Ferrodrom: a hands-on science center explaining how ore becomes iron and steel.
  • Charging platform and viewing deck: walk past the ore cars of the overhead railway high above the furnaces, then climb to a platform 45 meters (148 feet) up for views over the Saar valley.
  • Paradise: the former coking plant has turned into a wild garden with birch trees, foxes and frogs, plus art such as Ottmar Hörl's 10-meter "KingKong" sculpture.

The Urban Art Biennale, one of the world's largest street-art shows, runs until November 15, 2026. From November 1, 2026 to August 2027, the exhibition "Das stählerne Herz" (The Steel Heart) looks at German and European history through the lens of the ironworks.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the site is open 362 days a year:

  • April 1 to November 1: daily 10 am to 7 pm
  • November 2 to March 31: daily 10 am to 6 pm
  • Closed December 24, 25 and 31

A day ticket costs €17 (reduced €15), a two-day ticket €27. Children and teens under 18 and students with ID get in free. Public guided tours cost an extra €5; group tours can be booked in English and French, among other languages, through the visitor service.

How to get to Völklingen

By train: Völklingen station is about a five-minute walk from the entrance. Trains from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof take around 10 minutes and run roughly every 15 minutes, so the site works well as a half-day or day trip from Saarbrücken. Regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket.

By car: Take the A620 to exit 8 (Völklingen/Geislautern), or exit 7 (Völklingen/Wehrden) coming from Luxembourg. About 2,500 parking spaces are free of charge.

By air: Saarbrücken Airport is about 35 km away, Luxembourg Airport about 90 km, and Frankfurt Airport about 190 km.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are interested in industrial heritage, photography or modern European history, absolutely. Allow at least half a day; seeing the furnaces, the Paradise garden and the current exhibition easily fills four to five hours. Wear sturdy shoes, as there are many stairs and metal grates. Most areas are accessible by ramps and elevators, except the top viewing deck. Dogs are not allowed (assistance dogs excepted). A café inside the old water tower serves drinks and light meals; prices are in euros (EUR).
