About this place

The Niederfinow Boat Lifts, about 60 km northeast of Berlin, are one of the most impressive things to see for anyone fascinated by engineering. Two giant elevators raise and lower entire ships, together with the water they float in, by 36 meters between a canal and the Oder River valley. The steel lift of 1934 is the oldest working boat lift in Germany, and right next to it stands its huge concrete successor, opened in 2022. You can watch, tour them and even ride through by boat.

Two giants side by side

Prussia began planning a lift here in 1906 for the Berlin–Szczecin shipping route, but World War I delayed construction. The original Niederfinow Boat Lift finally opened on March 21, 1934. Its trough hangs from steel cables running over pulleys to counterweights, a design chosen because it stays safe even if several parts fail. In 2007 it was named a Historic Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany.

Because modern barges are larger, a new lift, Niederfinow North, was built alongside and inaugurated on October 4, 2022. It works on the same principle but uses concrete instead of steel for its load-bearing frame. Both lifts now operate in parallel.

Things to do

  • Explore the old lift on your own along the visitor walkways and watch ships being lifted; an audio guide explains the technology.
  • Join a guided tour of the new lift, starting several times a day from the information center and lasting about 45 minutes.
  • Visit the information center, with free films and models about the new lift.
  • Ride a boat through the lifts: excursion boats depart daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm until early November; book online.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, per the official website: open daily through October 31, then daily 10 am to 4 pm from November 1 to January 3, closed December 24–26 and for a winter break in January and February. The old lift costs €7 for adults, €5 reduced, €22 for families, and children under 7 are free. The combination ticket with a tour of the new lift costs €12, €8 reduced, €38 for families, and can be bought online. Strollers and wheelchairs cannot pass the turnstile, so buy tickets at the information center desk.

How to get there

Niederfinow lies in Brandenburg's Barnim district, roughly an hour's drive from Berlin via the A11 autobahn, with visitor parking close to the entrance. Regional trains stop at Niederfinow station, from where you continue on foot; the Deutschlandticket covers regional trains. Combine the trip with Chorin Abbey for a full day out from Berlin.

Is it worth visiting?

Definitely, especially for families and anyone who likes big machines. Seeing a fully loaded barge rise silently in its water-filled trough is unforgettable. Allow about 1.5 hours for a tour plus the old lift, more with a boat ride.

Nearby

  • Chorin Abbey: a brick Gothic monastery ruin a few kilometers north.
  • Eberswalde: a zoo, a forest botanical garden and the historic Finow Canal.
  • Oderbruch: a wide river landscape stretching to the Polish border.
