About this place

The Nebelhorn is the signature mountain of Oberstdorf, the southernmost market town in Germany in the Allgäu Alps of Bavaria. A modern cable car lifts you from the edge of town to the 7,297-foot (2,224 m) summit, where on clear days you can see around 400 Alpine peaks. With an accessible cliff-edge walkway, a summit restaurant and easy hiking, it is one of the best viewpoints in the German Alps and a highlight of any trip to the Allgäu.

Why visit the Nebelhorn

The mountain belongs to the Daumen group of the Allgäu Alps. Its name first appears in 1811 and probably comes from its role as a local weather sign whenever the summit was wrapped in fog ("Nebel"). The Alpine Club's Edmund-Probst-Haus hut at 6,322 feet has welcomed hikers since 1890.

The first Nebelhorn cable car opened on June 10, 1930, and was billed at the time as the world's longest passenger aerial tramway. A completely new system replaced it in 2021, with stations at Seealpe (1,280 m), Höfatsblick (1,932 m) and the summit.

Things to do on top

  • Take in the view: The operator says more than 400 peaks are visible in good weather.
  • Walk the Nordwandsteig: This accessible walkway, opened in 2016, circles the summit along the north face with a drop of about 2,000 feet below you.
  • Eat with a view: The two-level summit restaurant "Nebelhorn 2224" and the Marktrestaurant at Höfatsblick.
  • Hike or climb: Trails start at Seealpe and Höfatsblick, and the summit is the starting point of the Hindelanger Klettersteig via ferrata for experienced, equipped climbers.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the summer season runs until November 8, 2026. The first ride up is at 8:30 a.m.; the last ride down leaves the summit at 4:20 p.m. The winter season starts December 12, 2026.

Summer 2026 round-trip fares to the summit:

  • Adults €56.90
  • Youth (born 2008–2009) €43.90
  • Children (born 2010–2019) €26.80
  • Only the first child in a family pays; siblings ride free, and children born 2020 or later are free.

Cheaper tickets are available to the middle stations Höfatsblick (€49 for adults) and Seealpe (€34.80).

How to get to the Nebelhorn

  • From Munich: About 2.5 hours by car via the A96/A7 and B19, or by train to Oberstdorf, the end of the line.
  • From Oberstdorf station: The valley station on Nebelhornstraße is just under a kilometer away on foot.
  • Parking: Paid lots are near the valley station.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially on a clear day. The summit stations, restaurants and the Nordwandsteig are wheelchair-accessible, so the Nebelhorn works for nearly everyone. Go early for the best visibility, bring a warm layer, and pair it with the Breitachklamm gorge nearby.
