About this place

Movie Park Germany in Bottrop-Kirchhellen is a movie-themed amusement park on the northern edge of Germany's Ruhr region, about an hour's drive from Cologne and Düsseldorf. Spread over roughly 45 hectares (110 acres), it mixes roller coasters, water rides and stunt shows with Hollywood-style street sets. In fall it hosts the Halloween Horror Festival, which the park bills as Europe's biggest Halloween event – the main reason many visitors come in October.

From Warner Bros. to Movie Park

The park opened on June 30, 1996 as Warner Bros. Movie World, modeled on the Australian park of the same name. After changes of ownership it was renamed Movie Park Germany in 2005, and since 2010 it has been run by the Spanish operator Parques Reunidos.

Things to do at Movie Park Germany

  • Star Trek: Operation Enterprise (2017): a launch coaster about 130 feet tall that reaches 56 mph, billed as the world's first Star Trek roller coaster.
  • Bandit (1999): Germany's first wooden roller coaster.
  • Movie Park Studio Tour (2021): a coaster that runs partly indoors through film sets.
  • Excalibur and Area 51 – Top Secret: water rides for hot days.
  • Nickelodeon Land: gentle rides with SpongeBob and friends for younger kids.

Halloween Horror Festival 2026

The 28th edition runs on 22 event days between September 26 and November 8, 2026, with nine haunted houses, four scare zones and more than 300 monster actors. New this year are the "Jason Universe" maze (ages 16+) and the live show "PHOBIA". Haunted house time slots are sold separately online. November 8 is also the last day of the 2026 season.

Tickets and opening hours

Prices are dynamic (as of October 2026): dated online day tickets start at €34.90, an undated flexible day ticket costs €59.90, and children under 4 enter free. Parking is €9 per day. Opening days and hours change through the season, so check the park's online calendar before you go; Halloween event days run into the evening.

How to get to Movie Park Germany

By train, ride to Feldhausen station – the RE 14 from Essen Hauptbahnhof, the RB 44 from Oberhausen or the RB 43 from Dortmund – and walk about 400 meters (a quarter mile) to the gate. Regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket. Bus 267 from Essen stops at the main entrance. Drivers should use exit 39 (Bottrop-Feldhausen) on the A31 autobahn. The nearest major airport is Düsseldorf.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are already in Cologne, Düsseldorf or the Ruhr cities and enjoy coasters or horror mazes, it makes an easy day trip. Families with small children will find the most to do in Nickelodeon Land during daytime hours. Nearby, the Tetraeder landmark on a former mining spoil heap in Bottrop and the Zollverein UNESCO site in Essen show the region's industrial side.
