About this place

The Kunsthalle Bremen is the city's leading art museum, set on the green ramparts park at the edge of Bremen's Old Town. Its collection spans six centuries, from Old Masters to French Impressionism, the pioneering painter Paula Modersohn-Becker and contemporary installations. Unusually for a major German museum, it is still run entirely by a private art society founded by Bremen's citizens. It is one of the best things to do in Bremen on a rainy day, or any day.

A museum built by citizens

The Kunstverein in Bremen was founded in 1823 by about 34 merchants. Funded by donations, its first museum building opened on May 1, 1849; extensions followed in 1902 and 1982, and two new wings opened in 2011. Today the society has around 9,000 members and remains the museum's sole sponsor.

Director Gustav Pauli made the Kunsthalle an early champion of modern art: he bought Monet's Camille in 1906 and Van Gogh's Field with Poppies in 1911, a purchase that sparked a nationwide debate about foreign art in Germany. During World War II the museum lost many works; drawings taken to Moscow by a Soviet officer, known as the Baldin Collection, have never been returned.

Highlights

  • Impressionism and modernism: Monet's Camille, Van Gogh's Field with Poppies, works by Munch and Caspar David Friedrich.
  • Paula Modersohn-Becker: the museum marks her 150th birthday in 2026 with a focus in the collection.
  • Pipilotti Rist, Pixelwald Wisera: an immersive, very dark light installation.
  • Prints and drawings: one bequest alone added about 100,000 sheets.

Fall 2026 exhibitions: Mehr Frauen! (works on paper by Bremen women artists, through November 8, 2026) and, from October 31, 2026 to March 28, 2027, The Dachshund: An Icon Goes Walkies, a fun pick for families.

How to get there

Bremen is about an hour by train from Hamburg, with regional trains covered by the Deutschlandticket. From Bremen Hauptbahnhof, take tram 4 or 6 three stops to Domsheide, a short walk from the museum at Am Wall 207. Drivers can use the nearby Ostertor/Kulturmeile or Am Dom garages.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially for fans of Impressionism and early modern German art. Allow two to three hours. Nearby, the Gerhard Marcks House (the sculptor of the Town Musicians statue) sits next door, the ramparts park and its windmill invite a stroll, and the Market Square with the Town Hall, cathedral and Town Musicians of Bremen is about ten minutes away on foot.
