About this place

Lehnin Abbey (Kloster Lehnin) in Brandenburg is one of the most important brick monasteries in the Mark Brandenburg region, founded in 1180. The red brick church of St. Marien, the gate chapel and the old monastery buildings sit in a quiet valley among pine forests and lakes, about 20 kilometers southwest of Potsdam. It is an easy half-day trip from Berlin or Potsdam if you like medieval architecture and calm places.

Getting there

Lehnin lies in Potsdam-Mittelmark, about 20 km southwest of Potsdam and reachable from Berlin by regional connections; check Deutsche Bahn for the current route. Cycling is popular. The abbey grounds are on a section of the Way of St. James pilgrimage route.

Why it matters

Margrave Otto I founded the Cistercian abbey in 1180, and the first monks arrived in 1183. The abbey was dissolved in 1542 during the Reformation. The church was rebuilt between 1871 and 1877. In 1911 a Protestant deaconess motherhouse was founded here, and it still shapes the grounds. The three-aisled, cross-shaped basilica is one of Brandenburg's great brick churches. A wooden triumphal cross from around 1240 hangs in the crossing, and a late Gothic winged altar from 1476 stands in the chancel on loan.

What to see

  • St. Marien church, a major brick basilica
  • The gate chapel and gatehouse, the old entrance to the monastery
  • The museum in the former administration building, with exhibits on monastic life
  • The grounds, open year-round, with a restaurant on site

Opening hours and tickets

We could not confirm current 2026 opening hours. Older listings give the church as open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from April to October, with shorter winter hours, but other sources disagree. Call the visitor service at +49 3382 768841 or 768842 before you go. The museum was last reported at EUR 3 admission with a guided tour for EUR 4 per person (as of 2023, unconfirmed).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy medieval monasteries, brick architecture or a quiet day outside the city. Allow one to two hours. It is not a major crowd-pleaser like Potsdam's palaces, but combines well with a visit to Potsdam, which is about 20 km away.

Practical tips

The church is an active parish church with services and concerts, so access may be limited at times. Accessibility information was not confirmed. Currency is the euro.
