About this place

Corvey Abbey near Höxter on the Weser River is one of Germany's most important monastic sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Its centerpiece is the Carolingian westwork, built in the 9th century and the oldest surviving structure of its kind. Around it stands a Baroque palace with a museum, grand halls and a princely library where the author of the German national anthem once worked. It is a quiet, rewarding stop for travelers who love history and books.

Where it is and how to get there

Corvey sits on the edge of the small town of Höxter in the Weser Uplands of eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, roughly an hour's drive from Paderborn or Kassel. By rail, take a regional train to Höxter-Rathaus station and change to the local HOLIBRI bus to Corvey; the Deutschlandticket covers both. Cyclists will find it right on the popular Weser cycle route (R99), and you can also arrive by boat or a small tourist train from Höxter. There is a visitor parking lot in front of the complex.

A short history

Benedictine monks founded the abbey in the early 9th century, and the foundation stone at the current site was laid on August 25, 822. Corvey became a powerful religious and cultural center in medieval Saxony. The westwork was built between 873 and 885. After destruction in the Thirty Years' War, Baroque abbots rebuilt the church from 1667 and then the palace. In the 19th century the estate passed to the family of the Dukes of Ratibor. UNESCO inscribed "Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey" on June 21, 2014.

What to see

  • The westwork: Its upper chapel preserves rare Carolingian wall paintings with scenes from Homer's Odyssey.
  • The abbey church: A Baroque interior behind the medieval facade.
  • The Princely Library: About 75,000 volumes in 15 rooms, shaped by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who wrote the lyrics of Germany's national anthem and became librarian here in 1860. His grave lies beside the church.
  • The museum: Rooms on medieval, Baroque and 19th-century Corvey, including the Imperial Hall.

Tickets and opening hours

Until November 1, 2026, Corvey is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 5 p.m. The World Heritage ticket costs €14 and includes the westwork, church, museum and library; children aged 3 to 17 enter free. Public tours in German run daily at 3 p.m. (€5 extra), and private tours in other languages can be booked (as of October 2026). Check the official website for winter hours.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are exploring the Weser valley or the Fairy Tale Route region by car or bike. Plan two to three hours. Almost everything is wheelchair accessible except the upper chapel of the westwork, and there is a restaurant on site.

The daily public tour helps you understand how the Carolingian monastery and the later Baroque residence fit together, while private group tours can be arranged in English or other languages. Book lovers should not miss the library rooms, whose 19th-century bookcases still hold the collection assembled in Hoffmann von Fallersleben's time. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, and fall colors along the tree-lined avenue to Höxter are a bonus.

Nearby

Nearby you will find Höxter's half-timbered old town, Weser river cruises and Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory and palace downstream.
