About this place

When the first sea-bathing establishment on any East Frisian island opened on Norderney on 3 October 1797, the island was a poor fishing village. Two centuries later it is the best-known bathing island on the North Sea: white resort architecture lines the promenade, the old spa house tells of kings and emperors, and behind the town begin dunes and salt marshes that belong to the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park. At 26 square kilometres, Norderney is the second-largest East Frisian island after Borkum and one of the few you can drive onto.

History: from fishing village to royal resort

Doctors who praised the healing effect of sea air gave the impulse. After a water analysis in summer 1797, the Prussian king approved the bathing establishment, and in 1799 a first lodging house with a ballroom followed. Norderney became truly fashionable when the royal family of Hanover chose it as a summer residence, staying in the Conversationshaus every summer from 1837 to 1865. More than a hundred buildings in town are now listed monuments, from Neoclassical to Art Nouveau.

What to see

  • Conversationshaus: the Neoclassical spa house of 1822 on the Kurplatz. A German-Russian trade treaty was signed here in 1904. It now houses a casino, the tourist office and the library.
  • Marienhöhe: an 11.5-metre dune on the west beach named after Queen Marie of Hanover. Heinrich Heine is said to have written his "Song by the Sea" here; the café on top dates from 1923.
  • Kurtheater: opened in 1894, modelled on the Hanover opera house.
  • Das Kap: a 13-metre daymark from 1848, rebuilt faithfully in 2017 and the island's emblem since 1928.
  • Lighthouse: in service since 1874 and still the only active light on the island, set among dunes and walking paths.

Beaches, dunes and mudflats

The west and north beaches with their long promenade start right in town. Head east by bike or on foot and it gets quieter: dunes, salt marshes and wide sand flats at the island's tip. Guided mudflat hikes leave from the Postbake in the south and reach the mainland at Neßmersiel in about two and a half hours, along the old route of the mail coaches. Never walk on the mudflats without a guide. On rainy days, try the bade:haus norderney, opened in 2005 as Germany's largest thalasso centre at the time, or the bathing museum on the west beach.

Getting there

Ferries leave Norddeich Mole regardless of the tide and take just under 50 minutes, several times a day in summer. Trains terminate at Norddeich Mole, about 200 metres from the ferry. Buses 1, 2 and 3 meet each ferry on the island. Car traffic in the town centre is heavily restricted in season, so a bike is the best way to get around.

Tripto tip

On a day trip, do the promenade, Conversationshaus and Marienhöhe in the morning and cycle to the lighthouse in the afternoon. Sunset from the Marienhöhe is the classic finale.
