About this place

Gohlis Palace (Gohliser Schlösschen) in the Leipzig district of Gohlis is a small Baroque summer palace from the 1750s. It is described as the last surviving Baroque palace and estate complex around Leipzig. If you are looking for things to do in Leipzig that mix history with a quiet garden, this is a good stop of about an hour, with concerts, readings and a cafe on the grounds.

History

The Leipzig councillor and city master builder Johann Caspar Richter had the palace built in 1755/56. After his death in 1770, his successor Johann Gottlob Böhme finished the interior. In 1793 the building passed to the city of Leipzig by will. The Bach Archive was housed here from 1951 to 1985, and a restoration between 1990 and 1998 returned the palace to its 18th-century state. Since 2021 a non-profit company has run the site.

The poet Friedrich Schiller stayed in Gohlis in 1785 and was among the guests of the house.

What to see

  • The Oeser Hall: the festival hall has a ceiling painting titled "The Path of Life of Psyche" by Adam Friedrich Oeser.
  • The Baroque garden: fountain and statues recall Leipzig's bourgeois Baroque garden culture.
  • The courtyard wall and gate on Menckestraße, with the palace and its small tower behind them.

Visiting and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The palace itself can be visited only during events and guided tours. Guided tours run on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and you register on the website. Musical tours take place on the first Sunday of each month. Groups of 15 or more can ask for private tours.

The Baroque garden is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed on Mondays. The cafe is open Wednesday to Friday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. The website pages we could read do not list admission prices, so check gohliserschloesschen.de or email mail@gohliserschloesschen.de.

Getting there

The palace is at Menckestraße 23, 04155 Leipzig, in the Gohlis district north of the city center. Leipzig is well connected by Deutsche Bahn; from Leipzig Hauptbahnhof use the local tram or bus network and check the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe timetable for the current line. Details on parking and accessibility are only on subpages of the official site, so ask in advance if you need them.

Nearby

Schiller House, in old Gohlis, is a short distance away and is a stop on literary walking tours. Rosental park is also easy to reach from here.
