About this place

Bilstein Castle (Burg Bilstein) in Lennestadt is a striking medieval hilltop castle perched on a steep rock spur above the Veischede valley in the Sauerland, the wooded upland region of southern Westphalia. It has been a youth hostel since 1927, which makes it one of the few places in Germany where you can actually sleep inside a 13th-century castle. Even if you are just passing through, the courtyard, the round towers, and the view over the old village are worth a stop.

History

Nobleman Dietrich II of Gevore built the castle between 1202 and 1225 and then took the name Dietrich of Bilstein. The counts of the Mark took over in 1363, and in 1445 the Archbishopric of Cologne captured it during the Soest Feud. Until 1802 it was the seat of a Cologne district official. Ferdinand von Fürstenberg, later Prince-Bishop of Paderborn and Münster, was born here in 1626.

What to See

  • Two round towers, each about 8 meters (26 feet) across, linked by an archway and a tunnel beneath the courtyard.
  • The courtyard, ringed by the historic northwest wing and central building.
  • The outer bailey, with a gatehouse, a half-timbered house, and a stone bridge across the old moat.
  • The view over the medieval core of Bilstein village.

Visiting and Staying Overnight

There is no museum or ticket office: the castle is a guesthouse run by the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH). According to castle guides, the courtyard is freely accessible, while the interior is for guests. As of October 2026, the hostel has 204 beds in 53 rooms, from dorms to private rooms, and staff speak English. Reception is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The hostel closes from December 21, 2026, to January 3, 2027.

How to Get There

Lennestadt lies roughly 100 km (60 miles) east of Cologne. By train, travel to Grevenbrück station, then take a local bus to Bilstein and walk about 10 minutes uphill. The Deutschlandticket covers regional trains and buses. By car, leave the A45 at the Olpe exit and follow the B55 toward Grevenbrück. Free parking is available at the hostel.

Is It Worth Visiting?

As a quick sightseeing stop, it is a pleasant half hour. As an overnight base for hiking in the Sauerland, it is excellent value and full of atmosphere.
