About this place

The Nebra Sky Disc visitor center (Arche Nebra) in Saxony-Anhalt is the best place to understand one of the most important archaeological finds in the world, a Bronze Age bronze disc inlaid with gold astronomical symbols. A striking golden building above the Unstrut Valley tells the story with films, figures and a planetarium show. One thing to know before you go: the original disc is on display at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale), not here. The center is built close to where it was found.

Where it is and how to get there

The center is in Wangen, part of the town of Nebra, in the Unstrut Valley. By train, take Deutsche Bahn to Naumburg (Saale) main station, then the regional Unstrut line RB 77 to Wangen station, followed by a walk of about 700 meters. Service on the line has been disrupted at times, so check the timetable. Drivers park about 300 meters below the center for EUR 1 per hour, capped at EUR 3 per day.

Why it matters

The disc was found on July 4, 1999 by illegal metal-detector hunters on the Mittelberg hill and was recovered by Swiss police in Basel on February 23, 2002. It is about 32 centimeters wide and shows the sun or full moon, a crescent moon and the Pleiades star cluster. It is dated to around 1600 BC, and it has been on UNESCO's Memory of the World register since June 2013.

What to see

  • Permanent exhibition on Bronze Age trade, craftsmanship and astronomy, mostly with replicas and interactive stations
  • Planetarium show (24 minutes, twice per hour; narration is not stated as English, so check on site)
  • Panoramic window and cafe looking toward the find site
  • The find site on the Mittelberg, with a 30 meter observation tower, free and open year-round

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

From April to October the center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From November to March it is open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends and holidays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on December 24. Admission including the planetarium is EUR 8.50 for adults and EUR 5.50 reduced; a family ticket is EUR 17. During special exhibitions the prices are EUR 9.80, EUR 6.50 and EUR 23. The last planetarium show starts 45 minutes before closing.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you like archaeology, astronomy or striking architecture, and it works well as a half-day trip. It is more of an experience center than a classic museum, and the original disc is not shown here. Combine it with the walk or bus to the Mittelberg, about three kilometers away according to the operator.

Practical tips

The building has been certified "accessibility checked" under the German "Travel for All" scheme through May 2028. Dogs are not allowed in the exhibition. Currency is the euro. Please check the official site for the latest timetable and closures.
